I use a 13 lb Stant safety latch radiator cap. It has a lever on the top to bleed off pressure if the need arises to open the radiator when it is hot. I have a I6 250 cu in.

It sure will as long as there is some fluid in your recover (catch) container and no leaks in the system. I was losing coolant all the time but when I installed the recovery tank with this cap (and a new radiator) I havent't lost a drop.

    recovery??

    john,
I too have a 250-I6 w/14# stant safety cap and I do lose coolant occasionally. Was the recovery tank stock or did you add it later and what are the specifics, if you don't mind.....Robert
p.s. my 74 comet does not have a tank

My recovery tank is a JAZ tank. I think I paid about 19 dollars for it. Run a search for recovery tank on the tech forum and I have pictures of how I mounted mine. Since I installed it, I have been real pleased. Before I was always getting coolant on the driveway after driving. I'm attaching a picture of my set up. Tou can see the recovery can right to the left of the radiator. The cap overflow hose goes to the bottom of the catch can. The hose out the top of the can is the overflow from the can itself.

It is a 1970. It did not come with a fan shroud but I sure would like to put one on. Better for cooling. working around the engine when it is running is very unforgiving of a temporary lapse of where your hand is!!!!

Those caps are really bad, and tend to leak easier, I would suggest the non release type stock cap, I am pretty sure you can use it with a return type system.

I've used them exclusivley through the years and never had a problem with them leaking, and they certainly are alot safer if you need to open up a hot radiator.

I agree with you on the release part. I have never had one go on me either, but my father worked for a while as a smog tech/ etc, and constantly got those things in leaky, and told me they were not nearly as reliable as the non-release type.

ok.....???? Thanks for your highly insightful statement on this topic, I will have to file that one away for later use, it may come in handy next time you post an opinion on this site.

Anyhow, it WAS just an opinion, and there are always two sides of the coin. I thought I would just throw out the opinion of a highly skilled ase certified mechanic who swears against them.

Do what you want, it really isn't that big of a deal.

Don't be offended, I was just saying that everyone has their own opinion about these things. The funny thing about that is someone has to be wrong. I've used Stant caps for years and have never had a problem. You've used Stant caps and didn't have a problem. Several others have used them and didn't have a problem. Then someone says that they leak all the time. If that was true, don't you think at least one of us would have had a leaky cap?
