My next investment is going to be leaf springs and than traction bars. Hoping to cure a bad weel hop. What's the best deal for the money?

They look like caltrac bars. Down at the bottom of the thread page there is a set of plans for them provided by 71 Gold. Looks like I can do those. The price will be right and anything I can build myself gives me great satisfaction. Kinda like homegrown tomatos!

I just use cheapo Lakewood slapper bars.
I don't know if you have ever seen them just bolted straight on, but they usually hang way low done that way.
They are designed to be 'tuned' with shims or washers between the bar mounts and springs.
Set them up with no more than 1/2" between the snubber and spring for a soft ride. You can get tighter, to 1/4" or less, if you want instant action, but they can tend to roughen ride on bumpy roads.
Another thing you can do is get poly snubbers, they come in various heights, to make a more firm connection.

Another note, when running wider tires in the back, the cheap Lakewoods have square mount plates that turn down and sharp corners.
I put a grinder to mine and softened up the corners so they would not get into the tires.
Good luck
Dave

I just cut mine into a trapezoidal shape so the points were no longer near my tires. Too late, though. I lined one up to far forward and cut a nice groove in my old tires (the ones Anna burned up).

Picture is long ago, before I replaced the rear suspension and lost the shackles and air shocks (sorry for the big pic).

Yep! I just slapped Lakewood traction bars on mine also. Had the rear leaf springs rearched. What a difference....

The cheapos really DO work.
My 75 had hellacious wheel hop, the bars stopped it cold.
They didn't help traction, but at least the car stayed flat while it roasted the tires...

I've got a set of the Lakewoods, but they are the more expensive ones where the bottom plate is replaced by the traction bar. If anyone is interested, I'm getting rid of them and the brand new shocks that I used with them (eyelets on both ends). I was going to use them on my son's falcon, but his housing is too small. Myself I'm going to Caltracs with the Rancho shocks that they suggest.

Has anyone ever tried the style of traction bars that they used on the early Shelbys? They're called Traction-Masters. ( http://tractionmaster.com/ ) I was wondering how well they worked. They don't seem to be as conspicuous as some of the other makes. Any feedback would be much appreciated, as I'm seriously considering these for use on my car. Thanks. John B

John, I can't see any way to adjust these (put more preload on the springs). When they claim, "Traction-Master™ Bars are technically superior", I have to wonder on what facts they based that claim on.

They are probably correct in saying that "
Traction-Masters is historically correct for all performance cars built in the 1950’s..." A lot of performance parts have come a looong way since then.

Cal-Tracks, even slapper bars, have adjustments.

I dunno - I'm sure they help, but "superior"? I call :bs:

This might help (if you can't find the ones specific to the Mavericks)
