ok then, now how do I replace the rear main seal? (Mind you, I am only 19, and am new at actually working on motors. So, please, be patient with me!)
If we are vote'n on this I would replace the main seal. So far all reasons given are great. Another question asked was, "what other things should the lad look into while the six is out?" Seals and gaskets. Leaks tend to get worse over time. Especially on vehicles that have sat a long time and then have been brought back into use. IT IS NOT JUST A LOOKS THING! Plus, I hate crawling under a car to take a bolt out, and all I see where the bolt should be is a lump of oily dirt. The story goes like this: 1. Crawl under car to check something--evrything looks like big lump of dirty silly-putty.--Start scraping, get crap in eyes. 2. Crawl out from under car, clean eyes--get wire brush. 3. Crawl back under car--more scraping--find bolt, darn it was 5/8 not 9/16. 4. Crawl back out. And the story continues, It might be fun when you're sixteen, but it sucks at 40. If it were mine I would inspect the main bearings, oil pump oil passages. Give a good look see while it is out. It's the right thing to do and It is educational. Lou
If your not replacing the real main seal dont bother cleaning the engine up. Its cheap insurance...replace it!
