So's I tried to fix some vacuum leaks. That kinda made it better, but it made the car feel.. off. Timing-wise, that is.

So I went ahead and loosened the bolt to the distributor, started up the car, and set the timing by ear. I went to tighten up the bolt.. and it got tight, but the distributor still turned with no effort.

After poking around a bit I found that the where the bolt goes into the block, there's a piece of metal that (I assume) holds the distributor in place, and it's freely wigglin' there.

Did I break my distributor? The car still runs, but sometimes it's rough and sometimes it's awesome since the distributor just.. spins.

If I DID break my distributor, do I need a new one? How long will it take to switch one out? I've got a long drive tomorrow.

sounds like your hold down is not holding it down.

Try adding a washer to the hold down bolt. And make sure the the hold down is pressed in towards the distributor when tightening the bolt.

I'll give you a "golf clap" at least for that zinger. (@ half speed)

It does sound like you need to put a washer (or 'something') under the hold-down tab and try to re-tighten the hold-down.

shouldn't have hurt the distributor. sounds like maype the bolt got crossthreaded and it is tightening but not going all the way down. i'd put a washer or 2 under it and see if it tightens the distributor. at least until you can clean the threads.:)

The hold down was just facing the wrong way.

On a related (or unrelated) note, I lost my oil cap while changing my valve cover gasket.

Can I just get a generic one to put on there? This thing's going on a long drive tomorrow.

You need to get the 710 Model. Ask for it at the counter.

710,,,adds 25-32 horsepower for sure!!! If used with mobil one,,,sky's the limit!!!

Parts store or junk yard will get you one. Just make sure mounting and hose hook up (if it has hose going to it) is the same.
