I have a 1974 Maverick built for use in California that has every possible emissions device on it that Mavericks came with. I would like to remove one of them, the thermactor (basically a belt-driven air-pump) since this device was not on all Mavericks of the time. I don't want to go crazy and remove all emissions devices at this time since I'm trying to keep the car as stock as they came.

My question is this: What needs to be done to remove the thermactor without affecting the remainder of the emissions or vacuum system?

    Thanks.

If you're just looking to free up the power just take the belt off. I know when I started messing with mine I ended up pulling ALL of the emissions stuff. It was just easier.

If it's not illegal, I suggest removing all of the emission controls, because they suck, and a lot of that stuff doesn't even work after all these years anyway...

I agree. If you don't have to worry about smog check, all the crap they put on there ends up wearing out and probably makes the emmisions worse after all this time. Get rid of it, recurve your distributor, and put a decent cam in, and you'll be alot happier. On the legal note however, i don't think it matters where you are, if your car was built for cali, i think it has to have cali equipment. I'm no expert and could easily be wrong though. If you find a federal emmisions tag, thats a whole 'nother story.
