ya know.. i had a 72 charger one time that had a problem... the car wouldnt stay running after i started it.. once i let the key go it would die.. i checked all sorts of parts and replaced probably $100 worth of parts, come to find out it was this resistor thing on the firewall.. it was a $3.00 part so i know what you feel like.. it is great to have found it,.. hopefully it will stay fixed.. good job
Way to go Didn't take you too long, and didn't cost a hell of a lot. I HATE with a passion fixing electrical issues. I think I was only drawing 1 with the door buzzer. I wonder if you had a slow drain with THAT as well since it was acting up. At least it is fixed
Well I am going to find out about the buzzer for sure because even though it is an annoying sound it is part of the original equiptmet in the can and since it still works (when hooked up_ I think I am going to go ahead and hool it back up and check for drain. If it is a silght drain with the buzzer plugged back in and the door closed I guess I will unplug it and leave it unplugged if I don't get a drain with it hooked back up and the door closed I guess I will leave it hooked up
Mine drained over the course of 2 weeks or so, so it was a very slow drain. If I drove the car weekly or more, it was fine. After two weeks of sitting, it would barely turn the car over.
I wasn't going to dbring this back up but Knock on wood I am all fixed and not draining now so I'll just knock on my head for luck and tell you all what happened after I posted the solution Friday night. Went to bed Friday night after getting everything fix and got up Saturday and went out started the car and all was well, washed the car with my son, and was going to run it down the road to dry it off and vaccum it out then come back and wax it. After washing the car, started her up and the flipping altenator light was glowing red as rudolph's nose on a foggy Christmas night. Damn it.... Checked the voltage at the battery and getting just a tiny bit over 12 volt and decreasing with every start. Back to the drawing board. Took the altenator ( brand new 3-4 days old) off and took it back to the parts store. No questions asked they got a new one off the shelf and put the double groove pulley on it and home I go. Installed the new altenator start the car and Altenator light it still freaking on so I tested the voltage at the battery and got a little less than 12 volts, very very carefully while the car is running I tested the voltage at the altenator and I have around 13 volts. Shut the car off. Unhooked the negative terminal and unplugged the second replacement Voltage regulator and plugged my old rusted voltage regulator back in and the alt. light goes off and the car is charging. At this point I said screw it and went to a different parts store and got a new Voltage reg. brought it home and installed it and everything has been working happily ever after... Knock on wood. So I "THINK" the original problem was the old (original) altenator on the car has bad diodes causing the drain. Replaced cables, regulator and altenator and got a bad voltage regulator that was also causing a drain but the new altenator was ok. Took the new Voltage Reg back and got another new one and that one worked ok for one day and then something different went wrong with that one, (no longer draining but now won't charge) Replaced that one with a 3rd voltage Reg. from a differnt store and now I have everything ok. System is charging and not draining when the car sits. I'mmmmmmm Coo coo for coa coa puffs:bananaman
Man,, I read every thread of this,,, kudo's to you for sticking with it so well. I am very very leery of any electrical part I get from one of the chain type autoparts stores. The independents autopart stores are getting hard to find. We have a Car Quest here that seems to have higher quality parts and I know the owner. Glad you got it solved. Dan
