I am in search of a place where I can find a new gas tank for my 1970 Maverick. I have found a couple of places that have 1976-1977 tanks, but not 1970. I am open to the idea of doing somethign different than getting a reproduction or original tank, but would prefer to. If anyone has any ideas or places for me to look for a tank, please let me know. I would more than appreciate it. :anyone:

those are the only year tanks they make....i have a 1974 and i'm using the 76 tank...all you have to do is buy the 76 straps with the tank and your set.

I believe I have a 15 gallon tank and the 1976 had a 19 gallon tank though. Will the 19 gallon tank fit into my car without many modifications? Also, because I have not seen any other mavericks up close, do all years have the gas tank as part of the trunk floor. And if not how will that affect me converting to a 1976 tank?

Do you know of any other car that had a tank similiar to a 1970 Maverick?

The 70 is the only drop in tank. There is no other tank that will bolt right up. Best bet is to send yours off and get it reconditioned.

1970 was the only year that a drop in tank was used and it isn't reproduced. There is some "how to do" articles around that will tell you how to adapt an easily found older Mustang tank. Maybe do a search in that direction. Where are you in Northeast Pa?

Wow, that is certainly "north". I guess I'm in the southern part of Northeast PA. just south of Wilkes-Barre. If you get around this way give me a yell.

Early Stangs had small drop in tanks.
I am not saying they will fit, but that is something to check out.
They are repopped in many forms from dead stock at AZ, to 'safe' designs available from Stang vendors.

The Mustang tank will not fit without modifications. Fan installed one in his 70. I believe he posted what all was involved. If your good at fabrication and have a brake, you could easily make one work.

The stang tank is wider side to side and shorter front to back. It almost fits in the hole sideways. I've got pics on my cardomain site.

Fan had to cut out a lot of sheet metal and weld in more, but he made it work.

Best bet is to recondition a '70 tank if you can find one, or get out the torch and welder and go to town with a different tank.

For the people who don't want to wade through 13 pages of my junker...

When I need a tank, I think I will just get a poly cell and cut the trunk floor the exact size to drop it in.
I will weld the bottom straps in so it just drops and rests on them.
Then I will bolt in top straps to retain the tank.
That way I can have it half in and half out of the trunk and have plenty of room for dual exhaust.
