Here is a 1973 Comet on Ebay. Decent car and all, but the dashboard has a glove box and mine has a shelf. Why? I want a glove box, why does that one have one and I don't? The body tag for that car says 3/73 and mine says 10/72. Did I get leftover 72 stuff in my sweet ride? Is my Title incorrect or is mine just a very early 73 model?
Your car has '73 bumpers from what I can see, most likely your title is correct. Probably just an early production deal like you said. Oh, and the glove box aint that great, it's pretty tiny.
But as it stands I have nowhere to put my insurance, registration OR my gloves. The gloves man, nowhere to put them! The shelf is cool, though I do wish I had the tiny bumper.
What about one of those hump hugger consoles they make for Mustangs, I think it fits the Mav/Comet too, should do the trick. Unless you got a bench seat like me.
The glove box was a running change during the '73 model year, sometime in early 1973. All of the early '73 cars had a package tray, while all the later ones had glove boxes. In order to put the glove box in, you would have to change the entire dash out. The early dashes and later dashes are not the same. You have to remove the windsheild to change the dash. I keep my insurance and registration cards in one of those cheap zip up pouches that has elastic bands and slides over the sun visor. Got it at Wal-Mart a couple of years ago for like $1.99 I think.
$1.99?! Outrageous. Thats cool. I can do that. I do have a split back bench seat just like my 77 had. Buckets to come later though. Thanks!
you want a glovebox huh? cause i want to switch to a shelf. i have the shelf but none of the brackets or anything else besides the actual piece. maybe we can help each other out??
The 72 Grabber I had with a bench actually had a document holder built into the frame of the seat .... that's where I found all the original papers. Check it out ..
When I bought my '77, it had a tray - not the glove box. I'm going back with a glove box. The wise old sage I purchased the car from confirmed that it is the original dash and that all he needed were the tray brackets to make the tray fit. However, I cannot confirm that you can do the reverse - put a glove box on an early model that had a tray.
I don't know if the glove box was an option or a production change but it doesn't seem to have any real date attached to it. I have seen Mavericks as early as 73 have boxes and I have seen a 76 with a tray. Both were OE. I have an early and a late 73 and they both have trays. I think it is a lot like the four and five lug axles. I have a late 73 with a four lug axle and a 6 cylinder and a 73 with a V8 with five lug axles. Ford says all the 73 and later cars came with five lugs.... but what do they know.
I'll go out on a limb here and say no American made 76 Maverick or Comet had a shelf. Somebody changed it.
Since I don't smoke the ashtray makes a handy spot for the registration and insurance card. The tray is growing on me the more I drive around. Kinda neat looking.
I guess Hawkco and I are the only ones who have seen the trays in mid seventies Mavericks? Oh well, Like I said Father Ford doesn't seem to know what was in his cars, I can't expect anyone to know it all - I certainly don't. It surely looked stock and the owner told me he thought they all came that way.
