at advance auto parts they have a mecanical temperture guage made by sunco and it is around $17 and I was wondering if it would work on my maverick which has a 250 6 cylinder
i have the Sunco Tri Gauge kit... chrome.. mounted under the dash.. works awesome. mechanical oil gauge with copper line, mechanical temp gauge, and a voltmeter
I would estimate around 30 minutes if it's your first time doing it. Have some more antifreeze on hand, because you will loose some when you unscrew the temp sending unit out of the back of the head.
...unless you put a pan under the drain and drop the fluid level a bit first. Of course, then you have to pour it back in.
It is easier in my opinion to just remove the sending unit without draining the excess coolant. If you have the temperature probe of the gauge ready to screw in, you will loose coolant for all of about 5 seconds. Then if you loose enough to actually matter, you can just top it off. But that's just my opinion. Of course you probably wouldn't want the antifreeze draining all over the place on a pristine show car. But on my grimey daily driver, a little antifreeze is no big deal.
With my bad back, and my advanced age it might take the better part of an afternoon to get the job done. A few years ago it would have taken an hour to do it and make it look real nice.
I put the three-gauge cluster in the '74. Ignorance was bliss. Then I found out how low the oil pressure really was.
