I just posted a picture in my member gallery of a 71 Comet that I had a long time ago. One thing that I always wondered about is the floor shifter that was in the car. It was a three speed with a bench seat. The collar on the steering column moved in unison with the shifter, and I always thought the shifter must have been an add-on. Did these come this way from the factory? ... or does anyone else think that somebody changed it before I got it? I am really trying to remember if it was tied into the column lock, too.
It did come from the factory that way, It was for the column lock. My 74 had this feature from the factory. Just remember if you remove the linkage that parks the column, to put it in park and leave it there or your switch wont turn far enough to remove the key.
Sounds like you are speaking automatic tranny here. I probably should clarify ... that car had a 3 speed manual transmission.
That is so not hot. I did not know that and thank you for telling me before my kids heard the cursing.
Yes .. any floor shifter ... manual or automatic ... had linkage to the steering column for the column lock ..
Yep, mine has the 3 speed, has to be in reverse to get the key out. That is the only time the column lock engages. I kinda like that feature. Keeps people from leaving the car in neutral by accident.
Shifter Thanks for the input guys. It has been 20 years since I had that car, so memory is a bit foggy. Having to keep it in reverse is sounding familiar now.
Yes, it was on the manuals also. I've got one of the factory linkages myself. I'm just trying to figure out if I want to install it or not.
