Ok another issue with my car... I have alot of play in my gearbox (been this way for along time, but I figured I'll get some research done now), so my question(s) would be, does anyone know where I could get a replacement? Does any other car/truck have the same gearbox (bolts right in same connections, etc.), Does anyone know where I can get a complete rebuild kit and how diffecult is it to do... etc Hopefuly something in a budget... just found out I need lower control arms... damn those PST parts (press in bushing no longer pressed in) sorry for changing the subject... Any steering box help or advice would be appreciated. thanks

Try to adjust the play out first. Center the steering, and tighten the little screw on the top. Just barely tight, though. Maybe 2 fingers on the screwdriver. Too much and it will further wear the box out.

The box is designed to have play during a turn, and tighten up while driving straight. The gear inside is not evenly sized down the entire length, and has thicker teeth in the middle so the car won't swim as much when driving straight.

tried that, it's to worn out. One time I tightended it up to eleminate play and later when I went to have it aligned they went ahead and loosened it up and charged me $60 to do it... they said it was to tight. which I agree, it would bind when turning.

Where in AZ are you? I know of a few yards here in tucson that have mavericks. Not sure if they have steering boxes, but its worth a look.

When looking, remember that there is a ratio difference between the manual and power. Also, don't be afraid to rebuild these - they're easy. Most everything can be bought at your local bearing shop. There are several other threads already on this.

I don't know where you could get the actual gears. Wear can be taken out by adjustment if they are in decent shape. It seems like when there is LOTS of play, that the ball bearing has gone out. There are two bearings styles in these gearboxes - a roller and a ball bearing - in addition to the balls in the gear itself. Be careful when taking it apart not to lose an rollers and use grease to hold them in when putting it back together. Once is completely clean, assembled, and lubed with oil, you'll find that it will be extremely easy to move. I was amazed at what a difference it made - even when the box wasn't in bad shape before I started.

I eleminated my ps so it's just the gear box, I used the kit which replaces the control valve.
