Before you swap bulbs, make sure the plugs are contacting the metal base of the lens really good. Twist it a couple times to make sure any rust is rubbed out of the way. It grounds through the lens frame.

If that doesn't work, replace with a 2057 bulb.

Its supposed to be a single filament bulb. 1156 will work.

This bulb only lights up when in reverse on my car. Looks pretty funny, white inner and red outer. I have a Comet. Phil

I went check mine. It's a 1076 bulb, has single filament but two wires. One of them works on my car, the other does not light and the plastic housing gets pretty hot. I'll just take the bulb out for now.

I just rewired mine with new sockets from Pep boys. I used metal push-in types like on the Maverick, but these little beauties had extra grounds for use in the Comet. Now it's neat and clean and fully functional, with 1157 brake/turn and 1156 backup lamps the way they are supposed to be, but with $5 sockets instead of $20 OE-style plastic twist-in sockets. I'd show you a pic, but I can't upload anything. Do you have to be a supporting member for that? If you don't have a Pep boys nearby, the brand is Connect-Tite, should be at any major chain, I'd give you the part #'s but I threw away the packages...

Nevermind, found them on the receipt! The part is 84737 for the reverse lamp, and the brake/turn socket is 85825. These look just like the Maverick all-metal push in type plugs but with ground leads. If you are having ground trouble with your Maverick and need to add a ground wire, or if your harness was hacked like mine was (someone else had put in four different types of sockets!) these would also be a neater looking unit to install and permanently solve the problem.

Did you check to see if you had 12V at the sockets before you did anything? The reverse switch on the steering column might need adjusting? Does you car have the factory radio? the reverse light circuit is fed from the light circuit to the radio. I know this from experience.

    btw

I think that's why they enlarged the white part of the lens in later years...
