Just bought this maverick, my 1972 200ci maverick automatic.
Drives great overall, took it on the freeway today
and had no problem accelerating or decelerating, the
tranny was shifting great. Then I hit a very gentle
hill and at about 60 it would start puttering and it
felt as if maybe the tranny was slipping but at the
same time it felt as if the engine was choking so I'm
not sure which one it is. I switched from D to 2 on when
I was at about 45 and for a 5 seconds I had more power but
after the 5 seconds it did the same thing again. I switched
back to D until I cleared the hill (couldn't go any faster than
40-50). Then the downhill and flat part of the freeway came
and I could zoom around totally fine and hit 80 easy and was
able to accelerate and decelerate, no problem.

    Any ideas?

You probably have a vacumn leak some where......While the motor is running, cover the carb with a rag as to smother it. It should eventuly die, if it doesn't....You have a vac leak

sounds more like a problem within the carb itself, ive been there before:rolleyes:
maybe your mav is trying to tell you that its time for the 2 barrel conversion, hott cam, and exhaust upgrade!!!:Handshake

My first instinct was a bad power valve in the carb.

Low float setting or lack of fuel in the tank uncovering the pickup. Also weak fuel pump/bad gas filter.

i'd try the easy things first. like the float levels and the fuel filter. i would think if it was either of these two though that it would do it also when you tried to give it a good amount of gas.:)

I've had similar symptoms with a bad ignitiopn coil. When I checked, spark was weak. Ran ok until under load. Fuel is the main suspect. Filter, pump, float setting... A shot vacuum advance might act like that. Definitely put a timing light on it.

sounds to me like it just needs a good ol built 302 swap with a 3-4 speed and dueled exhaust...

K, I had a problem like that once. Changed tons of stuff. Turned out to be resistance in the ignition wires. Would only run bad under a load, like a hill. Put a new cap, rotor and plug wires and it ran fine. I was convinced it was fuel related. But I do agree with what everyone has stated above. Could be any of it.

ok, gonna head out to Kragen. Gonna try all the basic stuff and I'll report back. How do I know if my float level is messed up? Well, actually, what's a float level?

Had the same problem a couple months ago, the diaphram in the carb got all hard after years and years. Check your oil for gas smell. A rebuild fixed it.

I think it worked!! I changed wires, cap and checked all the spark plugs. They were too new to replace. The rotor was very new too. I checked all the vacuum lines and all the ones that need to be there (manifol and tranny) were in place and the other ones capped. And I put a rag on top of the carb with the engine running and it shut off, so I guess I have no leak. I changed the fuel filter too.
I took it for a test drive uphill and I was going 80, no problem. If it happens again I'll have to check the fuel thing that ya'll talking about.
