Did 73-74 Mavericks have Emissions equipment?

I've always wondered if 73-74 Mavs had pollution pumps, catalytic converters etc. The reason I ask is that I live in Pennsylvania, where we have annual yearly inspections. One of the main things they check for is emissions.

Now this may seem weird why I ask if 73 and 74 Mavericks had emissions, b/c I only own a 74. However, (kinda funny), the previous owner had to get a title made, and they put it down as a 73! (Apparently, they knew nothing about Mavericks:rofl2:) This may be for my benefit if 73s didn't have emissions, as my car has no emissions equipment.

    Thanks for your time...

I am pretty sure Kalifornia got the stuff early, however the other states didn't get converters until mid-75.
My 75 was built in April IIRC, and it was a non-converter car.

My '74 Grabber had a smog pump and EGR valve. I never personally saw the smog pump, but the guy who had it since 1976 said it had one when his grandmother got the car, and he removed it when he got the car from her in 1981. I removed the EGR valve. It didn't have a catalytic converter, nor has any other '74 I have ever seen. The car was bought new in Georgia.

My '73 had an EGR valve also. I did not see any signs of a smog pump on the original engine, but who knows. It was from Buffalo, NY.

My 73 Grabber came form California, and on the build sheet it says "California Emissions" and all it had was a EGR plate, no pump, and my 74 came from British Columbia, and all it had was an EGR.

I don't doubt you, but that is funny...
The pump is there to feed the cat fresh air so it can burn off waste.
If there is no cat, there is no need for a pump.
Fwiw, if there is a cat, you can't remove the pump or the cat won't have oxygen to burn and will clog up.

Ford had smog pumps on some cars long before the '75 intro of cat converters.

Yep, starts with a 4 to indicate the year of assembly, 1974. As I said, the previous owner obviously knew nothing about Mavericks.

Well, like I said, that's what I was told. I actually DO doubt that it had one.. There is no cat hump in the floor.

I have a Mitchell Emission application guide. I can list the devices but need to know what sized engine by cubic inches and manual or automatic.

I wonder what purpose it served.:hmmm:

Now that I think about it though, there were some...
I doesn't make sense to me to pump air into the engine/exhaust without a cat.
I know on cat cars, the only purpose is to put oxygen in the cat so when combined with heat, it will actually burn raw fuel off. Without the air (oxygen), it can't properly burn.
On cat cars, the cat will clog up if left in place without a pump.

The thermactor circuit which is driven by the pump actually pumps air to the exhaust manifold so that an afterburner effect occurs in the manifold itself. The feeding of air to the cats is a secondary function.
