I would politely tell him that it can be alot worse, then decide to set timing with open headers,During the day of course around 3pm on a Sunday is usually a good time. Then he should be very happy once the exhaust is reinstalled.
Dave, after writing a carfully worded response for 1-1/2 hours, my computer crashed before submitting. Though I have invested a lot of time researching I have never personally run an x-pipe. Some of my mopar buddies run TTI exhaust with x-pipe and dinomax super turbos and its a helluvalot quieter than Super 40s with no crossover. Though I dont doubt it will make hp over a non crossover system, I wasnt trying to sell the x-pipe as being a horsepower building necessity, it was just in the quote, which probably was from an ad. I spent a lot of time searching the net for info regarding the x last time I did an exhaust. I concluded that the x position isnt as critical as an h to make power. does wonders to eliminate interior resonance, will make tone higher pitched, will have a smoothing effect on a lopey cam sound, can be raspy at WOT, will quiet better than an H pipe. The manufacturers advertise them saying many of those same things. Many of those same benefits are the reasons I have never tryed one. My wife wouldnt let me try one on her Maverick cause she loves the sound the way it is (H-pipe). Blown74, I agree a crossover and 2-1/2 tailpipes should make a big enough differance to appease your neighbor, I dont see anything wrong with changing your car a little to avoid conflict with your neighbor. Its better to have mutual respect than mutual resentment. My plymouth is really loud, I am very aware of the hour of day I will start it just for that same reason. Sorry for turning this into a X vs H debate. I look forward to seeing you on the cover of "Good Neighbor" magazine.:Handshake ~Brian
i would piss him off even more like when waiting for your engine to warm up let it idle with the hood up so you can hear the noise of the fan always rev the engine even if you dont have to just to make it even LOUDER basically what Will Ferrel did on Old School with his (camaro??? or firebird dont recall it too well) also yea those electronic dumps work well but if you have it MOTORCYCLES are a dream in pissing your neighbors off theres a guy down the street with a harley and starts it ALL the time at like 10:00 its ANNOYING on saturday mornings thats just me though =)
There are all kinds of fun if you want to cheeze neighbors off. Pete Jackson 289-CN Rattler balancers Solid roller cams, with plenty of lash... Forged pistons in the morning (slap) Aluminum flywheels, to make the throttle extra sensitive... Flowmasters, bigger the tubes, the better. Detroit lockers, to add to the fun when you turn out of the drive at 3am. Electric water pumps and fans... to hum their tune. Don't leave out the classic noise maker, Holley Blue! Leave the rubber out of the bracket too, for that mini-jackhammer sound. Am I forgetting anything?
Straight cut gear 4speeds!!! Muncie style whine oh and for you automatic guys 4500-5500 stall converters always helps with the noise level
magnaflow end of story... will be quite. not raspy at all! throw an x-pipe on it and it will be even quiter! my one neighbor hates me as well. can't stand my maverick with the cut downs and flowmasters she says it vibrates the whole house! my other neighbor says my maverick with magnaflows is too quite. man can't please anyone... lol! but trust me go with that and i will be quite... stay away from chambered muffers if you don't want that raspy sound.
So, chambered mufflers such has Flowmasters sound = Raspy. What about Turbo mufflers such as Thrush they = ? Can some make a break down of the different types of mufflers and their own unique sounds?
one thing not the greatest thing to do but if you really want to put a little oil on your headers and exhaust pipes and start your engine not only will it be LOUD it will SMOKE and hope the winds are in your favor that should push him over imagine waking up to the car and walking out side for the paper and blam a cloud of white smoke overcomes you
My neighbor two houses up has a Harley, and he fires it up about 10:00 pm, warms it up for several minutes, then comes past our house and turns the corner. It doesn't bother me personally, but I bet there are some people that really get irritated that are trying to sleep already (like the old lady that lives between us). It's way louder than my car. Nobody has ever said anything to me, but I try not to fire the Mav up late at night or early in the morning because I want to be courteous. I live between two nice older ladies and I don't want to get them mad at me.
I'm the same way,but every vehicle i own has duals, and the only one thats not all that loud is the Lincolin LSC.But i also don't limit my driving to suit other people. My 64 pick up is by far the loudest of them all (460 big hydralic cam and 3" 2 chamber flows). If i have to go out and it's early in the morning i start it and leave won't idle it to warm it up or if it's late at night i pull down the street as easy as possible.Same here no complaints as of yet. It helps to have a Jack a## for a neighbor who constantly rides up and down the street on his dirt bike and has a Dodge Caravan with no muffler. Most of the other neighbors hate him so much they don't worry about me.
Oh yeah, been there. A Pete Jackson 289-CN is a spur cut gear drive. They aren't nearly as loud in a Ford as a Chevy... But they sound a whole lot nicer. In a Chevy, they sound like a broken chainsaw. In a Ford, they sound pure music! I think it has to do with the GM having a steel timing cover, with the water and pump totally divorced from it. The Ford has the aluminum cover with water running through it and the pump bolted to it. Sounds much better... though still fairly loud.
