Were the shocks staggered on 70 Mavs? And if so was there a year they werent' staggered? I tried bolting up my new KYB's to the swapped rear end and they wouldn't line up. Passenger side is done...but the driver sides "perch" is exactly the same as the passenger's side. It looks like it should be behind the axle but doen't line up right. Won't go on in front of the axle...just physically impossible. Do I have two passenger side shock "perches" on this rear? I'm stumped
A pic of the problem would help. But staggered shocks will use the same "perch", just rotated 180 degrees between left & right side. That will place the shock mount forward of the axle on one side and rear of the axle on the other. For non-staggered shocks it would be two different "perches" since both shocks would be on the same side of the axle. I believe all Mavericks were staggered. 1969 & older Fords were non-staggered.
Early ones were both on the same side. It wasn't until later that they staggered them. It wasn't much later, 70 or 71, I think. The Caltracs I bought had mounting plates on front AND back on the side that was staggered early on.
Makes sense then, the rear end is off of a 73-74. So, I need to get another mounting plate for the driver side from a 70, since both mounting plates were the same on those years, right!
Yep, 71 was the first year for staggered shocks and the V8. The staggered shocks were an attempt to keep the V8 from causing wheelhop.
