Hello, i am new here and need a little help. Now dont shoot me or anything but i am doing a engine swap in a 86 toyota pickup and the 302 that i bought i have found out came out of a 74 maverick so i came here for help. I have a program for my computer called desktop dyno 2000 and i have all of the stock parts imputed except for the cam timings, i have the lift but not when the valves open. when i just use one of there pre-deturmined cams and i just put in the lift it gives me more hp than the engine put out in the real world. the only reason that i'm asking this is because i want to know what kind of hp gains i can get by changing some things and leaving other things stock (i.e. changing the intake and carb, or exhaust, heads, and/or cam) i may just give up and get a aftermarket cam but i was just curious what the stock cam could do. thank you.
The stock cam will give you about 140 HP, or thereabouts. If it was me, I'd just get an aftermarket camshaft & lifters and be done with it. It should have a bunch more power, even if you get something like an RV/torque camshaft. Call a cam company and get their input, as I am no professional. Good luck
The stock cam in a 302 from 1974 is "JUNK" stock a 74 had about 128 hp. Any rv/towing cam would be better. I think I have the specs for your stock cam duration @.050 184 189 lift .368" .381" lobe seperation 114 104 also there were a few different cams what do you have for the lift of your cam also do you have a part # for the cam it should be somthing like 560, 774 or 821
