the panels were all originally ginger brown/tan/faded, but i plan to put a black interior back in my '73 so i enjoyed this nice rainy winter day in my basement painting my panels. they turned out really good and i am pleased with them. i tried a dye that i had but it didnt take too well to the plastic so i went to a local upolstry shop and he sent me to Advance where i picked up their black vinyl & upolstry paint in an aeresol (sp.) can. i was kinda wondering about the outcome because the can didnt mention plastics, but im very satisfied with it :)

not to mention i took some to the hord pads and stuff on some extra steering wheels that i have. good outcome as well..... see for yourself and tell me what you think :bouncy:

Looking good. I'm planning on changing my interior color soon. What kind of spray did you use? I painted the interior on a little hatchback I have black with a spray can last year. It turned out good but the parts of the interior with the most wear look a little cruddy now.

ill post a picture of the can itself tomorrow. i think it's made by Dupli-color and it's for vinyl and fabrics, in automotive interiors.

My son and I have dyed several interiors. We have changed white and tan to black, black and other colors to white, etc. It has been my experience that the vinyl sprays work better on soft surfaces than hard ones. NPD offers a spray for vinyl, VP-946, and one for hard surfaces, such as plastic, AP-946. I have found in either case that a good cleaning with soap and then cleaning with alcohol helps the spray to bond. They make a product called vinyl prep. I have used it with mixed results. The best results I have had in changing colors has been to primer the article before applying the vinyl or paint spray. I am sure the vinyl product from Advance is similiar to the NPD product. Regular DupliColor paint seems to work on hard surfaces after it is primed.

I just restored some hard plastic pieces, such as lower dash pieces on the Sprint Mav. I used a black primer by DupliColor from Advance before applying the AP-946 paint from NPD. It turned out very well. I also had to change a steering column and steering wheel from tan to black with the same process.

The key to long term sticking of paint and vinyl is preparation of the surface. Primer application seems to make the surface hold the color change the longest.

I have used the above application on door panels, kick panels, seats, dash pads, dashes, and all other interior parts. Hope this helps.

I have ben using Krylon Fusion for plastic.Painted my grill with the stuff.Turned out great. The first coat you can actually see it bubble up(bonding??)to the plastic. Its the first time I've used it though, dont know how durable it is. We will see..

That's what I used. I think I should have primed and prepped a little better. A few patches on my doors have worn out. Everything else except the kick panels look good, though. So did you say the dye wouldn't take? I planned on using dye......

That's disheartening. Where did you get your dye+ what company made it?
