ok so i was under the dash making all the stuff work and figured out the wireing but i looked up and above the fuse box there is like a flat panel under the "cowl" area its right above the handbrake rod anyway its decinigrated. My question is does the dash come all the way out or is this going to be a "keep cutting till you get to it" job please tell me the whole dash can come out by unbolting.
Thank God, is this a common thing because the entire car has minimal rust and then i get under the dash and im like oh crap my steering wheel will be in my lap next week
The windshield will have to be taken out though to get to the bolts on the front side of the dash. Maybe someone else on here will have some better tips for the removal though.
Ok remember this is my first ford in a long time but dont i have to take out the windsheild to redo my headliner too? and isnt this a rubber sealed windshield not glue in. If you caint tell I want to do a restoration but at this time im doing needed not wanted stuff. but if the windsheild has to come out im doin a headliner while its out.
i've heard it had to be out for the headliner.....my windshield is cracked so when i replaced it i'm doing the headliner and dash also
Yep to do a headliner the front and back windows must come out because the headliner wraps around the window frame and glues down. The rear window is the one that has the seal that just pops out but more than likely it will be dry rotted and need to be replaced. The front window is similar but they do have the very messy sealer on them. Ask me how I know.
What about the little rear quater windows? do they have to come out. oh and by the way i havent seen replacement seals for those things where can i get them im only 45 min. away from autokrafters they helped us with my Ranchero have yall had good luck with the on Maverick parts?
The quarter windows will have to come out too because the seals around them cover the headliner and the latch for them screws on over the headliner too but they are really easy to take out. I havent delt with Autokrafters before but I know of people that have and they have never had a problem with them. You may want to compare their prices with the people over at RPS also. Here is a link to their web site. http://www.restorationpartssource.com/store/
I've seen a headliner done w/o glass removal but 99% of people say it has to be done. As for the rust on your steering column... howd it get there?
i would find the answer to that question first.... also, what do the...floor pans...look like in the front? if it is a...cowl problem...you may need to rethink the project.. ...:Handshake...
Andy, it is possible but not nearly worth the trouble in my opinion. Odds are, the glass seals need to be changed out anyway from cracking so what better time than this to do it. It's extremely hard to get all the wrinkles out of the headliner if you can't stretch the material out before gluing it down.
Im asuming that the drain for the vents around the wipers has been stoped up and water has set there for some time? Oh and by the way for some reason the floor pans are like new. Very minimal surface rust.
Thats why I asked how it got there... may need cowl repair. As for the headliner install w/o taking glass out... We didn't do it... we had it done. A local shop did Old guys/Mavmans maverick. They are out of business now but the shop did some work on the original batmobile back in the day. I do agree the seals might as well be replaced while doing this. I hope the project comes out ok and the rust issue is fixed soon
