I am putting 68 Cougar tail lights on my Mav. Here is my problem, the grill cover for the tailights are black painted over chrome, only 20% of the chrome shows on these. I started removing the black paint with steel wool. There is beautiful chrome under there. Problem is I cant get the crannies and corners good with steel wool and it is taking forever. I used aircraft stripper. Doesnt help much. What would you do? I was thinking of a mild acid? Think it might eat up the chrome? I am on the verge of just painting it all black.
That stuff works very well on One Shot lettering enamel, may be the thing, or you could just throw them out in my garbage
That's what we use too. The stripper needs to sit for about 10 minutes or longer in order for it to completely lift the paint from the chrome. After it has soaked for a while you can then use the steel wool or a stiff brush to get into all the little nooks and crannies. Sometimes I use laquer thinner on the steel wool to help get the left over paint and stripper off too. The thinner will help to melt the paint and it effectively ' kills ' the paint stripper. Just keep in mind that this prosess will not work on aluminum that has a black anodized finish.
I took the time to paint the 9" that I just swapped into the Comet and got brake fluid on it from bleeding the brakes. Paint came right off where the fluid landed.
I used paint stripper & a old scotch brite w/ a tooth brush. Just takes time nothing good gets done fast! Good Luck!!!
If you use a stainless steel scrubber pad gently it will remove the paint without marking the chrome up. Paint stripper works but be sure to rinse it off when you are done and oil the chrome. Chrome is real hard but it is porous and the chemicals will allow water to get in behind the chrome. If you rinse it with hot water, dry it and then oil it the oil will penetrate and it won't rust under the chrome.
