Hello out the in Maverick land.
I have a problem that hopefully someone can please help me with.

Ok, here it goes. I just bought a 77' Maverick, 302 ci, v8, 97,000 original miles, runs like a champ, but there is a problem.
When my car is cold like in the morning it will fire up like a champ, but after i drive it for a while the engine will heat up like normal, but when i get out turn it off and try to fire it back up it won't want to turn over.

Battery is at 100%, alternater is putting out 13.6 amps, and i just replaced the cilinoid.

I have no idea what the next step should be.
My buddy was telling me that it might be heating up the cilinoid to much making the soft metal inside expand not allowing it to fire up.

    Please Help me!!!

You should have the starter tested. Does the car have headers?

No, the car doesn't have headers. So you think the starter would be the next bet.

But, if it isn't the starter where would i go from there? :Handshake

Check all of you battery cables. Look for corrosion which has wicked up into the jacket of the wire. Make sure the connections are tight.

When i replaced the side wall mount cilinoid i cleaned up all the connections.
The car will not start only after i've been driving it for at least 15-20 min on the freeway, but it usually doesn't occur when i simply drive in town.

Does the word electrolitic carburator and vapor lock mean anything to you?

Yes, neither of those would prevent your car from turning over.

I'm thinking the ignition box going bad or the distributer. I would probably go to parts store an buy one, try it to see if this fixes it. They are pretty cheap an if not the problem, stick in trunk an keep for a spare.

I agree with Dave, likely an ignition problem.

I just pulled the starter and had it tested. It was fried!!, so i picked up a new one, hooked it up, drove down the interstate for about 20 min, took it back, turned it off, waited about 5 min. It fired right up!!!
Thanks All, she runs like a dream now.
I'll prolly be back looking for help in the future.
You guys are a great help for all.

    Thanks,
    77' Mav

    Ford Starters!

I have owned and worked on fords for over 20 years and when a ford starter is going bad it will almost always do this. If my fords crank slow when warm I replace the starter first thing. Usually fixes the problem as you have now learned. I have been lurking on the board for a while now this is my first post. It is a woderful thing to see people learn new skills that will last a lifetime.

    1970 maverick I6 bone stock.
289 hipo and four wheel disc brakes will be installed this spring. No heat in my garage and its just too cold right now.
