I was trying to figure out how much it would cost to swap in a fuel injected 302 in to an original I6 mav, Estimations or some input would be fine.
i used a 92 5.0 it cost me 450.00 for motor trans computer and wiring harness also bought motor mounts and trans mount 100.00 headers 50.00 flowmaster 2 of them used 50.00 fuel pump 125.00 electric fan 25.00 floor shifter 30.00
Worst part,,,, is the shock tower braces/upper plentumn clearence. Simply put, there is none!! So youll have to build a new setup for the tower braces to clear the plentumn. then there is the problems with the kickdown rod,, sure something could be built,,, maybe even a custom cable setup,,, leave the long 6 cyl throttle cable,,,, youll need the extra length to route to the passenger side mounted throttle plentums. Run a return line to the tank, and hook up an inline high pressure pump,, the rest is electrical,,,,,, When I built my harness,,,, after it was all said and done,, 3 wire hookup, power, ground and a key switched power source,,, fired right up!! I have an extra SD harness built if you need one. Easily converted to Mass air setup. Hope this helps, ChadS ChadS3@hotmail.com
If you will be using a C4 automatic, the kickdown lever has to be changed and a special double joint arm made to turn the lever oppisite for use with an AOD TV cable that goes right to the EFI throttle body and used for kickdown. The double swing joint can incorporate an adjuster to have adjustment of the swing travel and allows a total adjustment at both ends of the cable. I know it's hard to visualize without a drawing but that has been my setup ever since I converted a 302 to EFI in 1995. The fuel pump can be a pickup truck external type and mounted on a plate above and forward the rear axles with a short pickup hose to a modified tank pickup/ sender assembly. One problem you will have if you don't put a deeper sump in bottom of the tank is you will run out of fuel when the tank gets down to about a 1/4 and uncovers the pickup inlet on foward acceleration. The motor will cough until it gets fuel again. You need a pair of shorty headers and custom head pipes to locate the Oxygen sensors in. Might as well make up an X pipe to go with the headers and flow pipes back to the mufflers. The headers I use are for Mustang use. With a simple mod to change the outlet angle more downward, the fit become perfect with no firewall or steering box clearence issues or with the trans or floor shift. If done carefully this will all tuck up under the car so well you can't see it from the side but the mufflers ends can't be hidden from the back view on these cars, very well. The rest is locating 'a larger' battery back to the trunk, new fuel lines, fabbing the strut braces out of square tubing with flat ends added so they can be shifted a bit out of clearence issues. The rest is common work to change over to serpentine belt drive or v belt is needed, fan blade with pitch to match which bellt drive you use, getting rid of the alternator regulator and wiring to control the fuel pump and EEC.
i did the 170 to 302 swap. i spent $2000 on getting the 302 rebuilt i bought a tranny for $100 bucks from a junkyard new tranny pan and rebuild kit, about $250 torque convertor, hughes 2500 stall,$ 250 hooker headers $169 new exhaust (dual with flowmaster 40 series) $300 frame mounts from a junkyard $80 new distributor (stock single point, NEW) 89.99 spark plugs and wires $40 engine gasket kit for 302 $50 302 engine bolt kit $125 rented the auto hobby center at the air force base near my home (you have to be retired or active or in the guard/reserves to utilize these services) $80 for the three days it took me to swap the engines. misc funds for things that you might need while building, like bolts, sealants, etc $150-200 of course i am sure i am missing some things. i did my swap in 2003.
