I was all set to change the oil but I don't find a plug on the lower part of the dif at all. Do I unbolt the whole thing? I don't want a bunch of springs, shims, and snakes jumping out at me becausei don't knnow whatI'm doing.

    Thanks

You have to pull the axles, drive shaft, and then the center section. Nothing will fall out.

Like Dennis said. Only thing iI would add is to make sure you have something to catch the rear end fluid. Don't want it on the floor if you can help it. It stinks and is pretty thick (90 weight).:)

    Welcome to Ford engineering.

I think that the dealers used a siphon type machine to remove gear oil out the fill plug.

The way I drain the oil, and it only gets most of the oil out, not all.

Raise the rear end up to the highest point on a pair of jack stands.
Remove one axle, and lower that end of the axle down with your floor jack.
This will drain most of the oil out of the sump portion of the rear end housing.

You can loosen the third member, but as mentioned it gets messy. The other problem is that it is liable to leak after reinstallation.

It is a bung type plug.
Look for a square hole in a flush mounted round plug. It will be in the cast iron third member, this is also your fill level.
You will use the end of a 3/8 inch ratchet extension to remove.

The filler holle is not on top. It should be on the rear of the housing. Mine comes out with a 3/8 ratchet with no socket on it. You only want to fill it up to the hole.:)

NAPA should have or be able to order a Rhodes gun for you......a suction tool that allows me to do this at this very thing. The fill-plug is located on the drive shaft side of the carrier/housing,on the driver side, about at the same level as the drive shaft.....Hope this helps:thumbs2:
