found a steering column for a floor shift, my column was a 3on the tree but now on the floor. can I just unbolt the old column and bolt in the new one and plug the harnesses up?

The only difference might be the turn signal switch. There are 2 different plugs. I think they changed that in 73. They all mount in the column the same so you can just swap it if needed.

You can also just change the top two "collars" of the column as well. Not sure which would be easier.

Isn't the neutral safety switch located in the column as well? It was on my 72. I moved mine into the floor shifter that I got from a bone yard from a 73 Mustang. You can also move it to the trans, as well. The harness plugs will be different, but the # of wires & the color codes are the same. The turn signal switch can be transfered from column to the other, so the plugs match. Hope this helps.
I guess, I forgot that you have a 3 speed, so a neutral safety switch is not an issue

The top 2 collars cannot just be bolted on on a 3 spped column because the shift tube must be removed and rotated and reinstalled. I dont remember how much or wich way, but once you get it all apart, it only goes back together 1 way.

Do some message boards just continue old posts on and on? I've never really understood why people do it? But at least they know how to use the "Search" feature :D

I guess recalling old messages is better than asking the same question over and over and over and...

My thoughts exactly! At least us newer members can get a look at the past and learn something to boot. :thumbs2: As far as the column swap, this ought to be a tech article (if it's not already).

Most people who switch to standard transmissions from automatics don't replace the whole column, just the bell for the shifter arm.

Exactly which pieces do you need? I have a 73 3on the tree column I'm going to sh!tcan and can send you the parts if I have them.
