    engine for 71 mav

hello Steve22 and welcome to the forum ,my suggestion is a 302 ,some of the early models came stock with them . A good running 302,68 to 71 with just a aliminum intake and a 600 to 650 cfm carb and headers and dual exhaust and it will rock for a street car . cheers Jimmy2gates

    2 questions...

#1...how much money you got ?
#2 how fast do you want to go ?

...then you build the car to go that fast ...:yup:

from what i have learned over the years...my money goes faster than my car...
    ...:chirp:...

You can put any engine you want in the car. The only thing you are limited by is how much money you have. Like Frank said, you need to ask your self what you want to do with the car. "race car" is a very broad term.

welcome! a 302 would be a good choice, there is tons of stuff available for it, and they are a pretty good motor. but like the others said, you can put anything in it if you want to bad enough. good luck, and most importantly, have fun.

first of all. What type of race car do you want? Drag car, street car, road race? if it is a race car for the drag strip then you need to decide what class you want to run. NHRA runs a Summit racing series at the California strips. They have 3 classes. Sportsman, Pro, and Super pro. Super pro is the quick dragsters and door cars using electronics. Then there's pro and sportsman. I reccommend Sportsman til you get your feet wet and learn about the system. also it limits you to run no faster than 12.0 in the 1/4 mile. This is very doable with a 302 and a few speed parts. Then if you decide to move up you can stroke the 302 out to 347 and the skys the limit depending on how much you want to spend. Also there are other groups that sponsor races out here such as the Pacific Street Car Association. They run a lot of heads up classes and acouple of Bracket classes or Index classes. They have a web site with all the rules.
Also use the search forum on here for info on things like tires, traction bars, etc. Also if you go to the tracks they usually sell the rule book for the NHRA. There's things in there like if you move the battery to the trunk, you need a cut off switch. And when you need to wear a helmet and how fast will decide on the roll bar. In Sportsman all you need to run to start is a safe car. Seat belts, all the lug nuts, Battery hold down, etc. :Welcome: Good luck.
