    Hey!
I'm considering replacing a tired 302 in a '71 Grabber and had planned on a roller-cam 5.0 crate engine. However, since I'm going to all the expense and trouble anyway, should I consider a 351W? What are the pros & cons? Obviously, more cubes is desirable for performance but I wonder if I'm just asking for trouble. Any input or opinions would be appreciated, especially from owner's who have attempted such a swap.
    Thanks.

Headers on a 351W swap are a pain. For spark plug access you really need to cut the shock towers also. Do a search on 351 swap and you should find everything you need to know.
If your looking at crate engines you might consider a stroker 302 instead.

I was wondering about the plugs since the Windsors are slightly wider. I definitely don't want to get into the shock towers. Do you have suggestions on a crate motor supplier?

I have the Coast High stroker kit 347. Wasn't real happy with initial quality, and when I needed a replacement piston and rod their customer service sucked. I would go with the Ford Motorsports crate GT-40 motor. The prices seem real good and they can be bought directly at some Ford dealership parts departments for a decent price.

Unless you want to trim the shock towers back, I would stay with the 302 based motor. You can get a stroker moter to 331 or 347. More than enough performance for a lightweight car. I had a 351W in mine when I bought and learned a lot of new curse words trying to change the plugs.:)

Yeah, but a 393w is cheap/easy, and for 347 money, you could build a 408w!:evilsmile

Thanks very much for the advice. I've got a '68 Torino with 428, so I know about cussing sparkplugs. At any rate, I'm going to follow your advice and stick with the 302. I'll be asking many more questions as this goes along!

That sounds good. I'll check with the local dealership. Will most of the original covers, brackets, & tin swap over or do I need to look for upgrades?
    Thanks.
