I plan on using those hooks that went on the old exhaust manifolds to hook the motor up to the cherry picker. I am putting the motor in Saturday with the transmission. I will bolt the hooks onto the the holes in the exhaust ports, one per side.

    Questions:

Is this safe without the manifold as I am putting headers on?

For a good balance with the trans on should I bolt it towards the back or middle of the engine?

You need a load leveler. You have to start it in level, drop the tranny end down, as you slide it in you will need to bring it level again.
If you are real young, very strong, and none too smart you can muscle it in place.

i definatly recomend getting a load leveler. for the extra 30 bucks it really makes life easier. espically if you want to do the engine and trans as a unit.

we just bought one o use with this nissan engine were doing, i had never used one but now i'll never go back

I just put mine in using the plate that bolts to the intake manifold along with the load leveler. Also when the tranny gets down there i usually put a small furniture dolly under it so it rolls back instead of dragging. :)

Good Info does the car need to be elevated to do this.

Or, for another approach, can my c-4 stay where it is when I pull my 250 then drop in my 302 and bolt it back up, do I need to loosten or unbolt the c-4 for this? I'm getting info that with mild v-8 I won't necessarily need to modify my '74 C-4 since it is attahced to a 250. So I am thinking, unbolt my 6 from the C-4 pull it out then drop the 302 in,

It is a bit tricky to do it with the trans in the car, unless you have done them before. I would pull the two together using the plate on the intake when installing them. A helper is a good idea if you don't have a load leveler. Car should be up on 4 jackstands on a solid flooring. If you are installing headers, depending on which one's, they will have to be put in while lowering the engine down. The lifting plate should have 3 holes in it so you can pretty much get the angle that allows some ease of installation as a unit. One thing I would do is pull the c4 pan and look for signs of worn clutches or washers. Clean the gook out and clean or put on a new filter and fill with new type F fluid when installed in the car. Also adjust the bands before installing, lot's easier when it is out than having to lay on your back underneath. Details on the procedures are in other post's on this board. Forgot to tell you about installing a drain plug in the pan( 3.00 at Advance) makes future fluid changes and service, much easier and not so messy. Last but not least, check the motor mounts and trans mount, for torn rubber and such and replace if necessary. Top priority is "SAFETY" when doing this job, keep all of your appendage's that you want to keep for awhile, from getting pinched or smashed. Good luck as always.

I use a leveller, and bolt the chains to the cylinder heads, easy as pie!
