I offered to give you some help but there was no reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So whats it gunna be, you want some help or what???????????????
Yes ,FordMaster169 ,i would like your help ,but i was hoping someone else would also step up to plate that way i get a complete torque box with all the measurements ,as you did say yours was a little short on the rocker so all my measurements would not be accurate enough to take to a metal fab shop.I dont want to hit and miss ,i want my first one sent to a fab shop to be dead on accurate, and as Craig Selvey said it my be two our three peices that have to be welded together when installing to make a complete torque box, i personally have never really looked at the complete design .
That's sad to hear, but those who have been in the Maverick world for many years probably aren't surprised. I have a "for instance" pending right now. I can get several of the nice, chrome things for Mavericks and Comets reproduced overseas. One item that seems to be in high demand is the 1970-72 center grill emblem. This is a complex multi-part piece, so even having it done overseas would require an investment of $10,000 total. I could retail them at only $79 each, maybe lower, but by my more experienced calculations, it would take three to five years just to break even, and ten years to sell the minimum run required and realize any profit. That's simply too long a time period for sellers to wait to break even, let alone to realize a profit. It would take pre-paid orders of around 75 to 100 before I'd even consider shelling out the ten grand. And that's the problem with Maverick parts; there IS demand out there, and there IS profit that can be made, but it's over too long a time period for a retailer to invest such large tooling and up-front costs. And just think, this is for a small grill emblem made overseas. The tooling for a metal fender or valance panel is ENORMOUS compared to a grill emblem, especially if you'd try to have it made in the U.S. There just isn't enough volume in the short run to make these parts happen. Continued good luck to Joe and those that try to have these parts made. It's a long, uphill battle.
When I get back home this weekend I will look and see what I can do. I can look at the cut off part and then I can piece the rest together from there with the outside measurements. Till then.
From the drawings I have (no dimensions on them) the torque box itself is 2 pieces, with another bracket that welds to the frame rail. 3 different Ford part numbers. Plus when you look at them in the car, the sheetmetal for the floor pan goes over top of them, it will be some major work to replace them.
My pops said there nothing that a good auto body rebuilder cant do,he said he should be able to do both in a 8 hr day. With the rite tourches and air metal cutters and a good zip cutter ,my pop told me with out even seeing the job he'll getter done ,he told me he has never come across a job he hasnt been able to do in 40 years in the trade .
Maybe so. But he ain't come accross no Maverick or Comet, that'll get his arthritus stirred up and his marbles mixed . I'm just playing arround... I hope it comes together for ya .
I cant beleive i'm reading this... A lot of people asked to have part reproduced. Joe came in and said he would reproduce part for the Maverick/Comet community. Everybody applaused.... but you are saying that nobody is buying the part?? Is it me or there is something i dont understand ?
It's simple; there's a big difference between wanting a part and actually buying a part. That goes for any Maverick part and everyONE, including me. This is why I have not had items reproduced over the years. I have had places that were willing to produce some things, but I knew from experience there wasn't sufficient demand to cover the tooling and upfront costs of the runs needed to produce them. Joe clearly made ALOT of effort to get done what he has. Perhaps he'll be able to continue on, but the battery trays and frame rails are hard pills to swallow, I'm sure. We should still applaud Joe for what he has attempted, and what he may yet get accomplished, but as some of the more experienced Maverickers on here have said since the beginning; people should not get their hopes too high that these parts will materialize. If people want to get the parts made, they have to be willing to ante up the money ahead of time. It's the only way we're ever going to see most Maverick parts ever get produced.
I agree with Maverick connection, except im going one step further and ill have every part i need custom fabricated for myself . These torque boxes are my first project for a custom part for my needs only ,cuz im sure the cost will not be worth it to anyone other than myself. Im still waiting to here from Fordmaster169 with his contribution to this two peice torque box ,i will have a set build for him at my cost if he wants a set for himself . I have another 1971 grabber blue original v8 high bucket ,floor shift auto 93 code grabber barn find .It needs torque boxes ,the rest of the car is almost MINT inside and a little surface rust on the lower quarters and lower fenders .
There are several reasons people by reproduction parts for their car ... 1) Cheaper than NOS parts 2) NOS parts are not available 3) Good used parts are not available I think Joe chose the frame rails first because 1) he needed them and 2) they were relatively easy to reproduce ... but I personally have never seen anybody ask for them prior to Joe saying he was making them. As far as the battery trays ... the tray itself was already being repopped for like $15 ... all you had to do was reuse the bracket off an original tray. Most of the time if the original tray is rusted the mount is still good. Only 3 spot welds and its off. The repop composite valances seem very expensive to me. I personally would rather spend that kind of money on an NOS metal one or a nice used one ... I want my car all metal. Not sure what happened to the Boomerangs ... those I think have a good chance of selling although I am skeptical on them being plastic. I think the issue with making repop Maverick parts is you really need to know Mavericks ... not just take input from a message board. I think it was a combination of the wrong parts ... or maybe it's too early to sell enough Maverick repops to make money ... What folks really need? Boomerangs - Deluxe Gas Caps - Lower 1/4 / door / fender repair patches, battery side fender apron, metal small bumpers. If somebody could produce these parts and sell them for cheaper than NOS or restored ... they would sell. I would also not bother with anything other than metal for making parts ...
I know it's not exact and may not even be close, but has anybody looked at the outer section of the Mustang torque box to see if it would work. They've got them in the NPD catalog for $19.00. Then you would only have to make the interior part. - Matt
