We fixed the fuel sending unit on our Stallion yesterday and not only did it work, but it showed the the gas tank was nearly empty. That was kind of odd because when we parked the car last summer, the tank was nearly full. The car was parked outside with a tarp over it and the only time it was driven was in and out of our garage. It spent most of the winter in the garage too. That's when we discovered the sending unit was no longer working ( A wire had broken off of it). There are no leaks in the tank or the fuel lines. I find it hard to believe that almost 18 gallons of gas would just evaporate. I was under the impression that is pretty hard to siphon the gas out of the tanks that only take unleaded fuel, but now I'm starting to wonder.:hmmm: Do you think some thieving low-life could have siphoned the gas out of the tank?

Jean, with gas prices the way there are, I wouldn't doubt it.

especially if it was sitting out side for that length of time.... is there a drain plug in the tank....if so...it could be drained in 5 mins and never be noticed,...since they are laying on the ground...

We are seeing fuel being stolen here again. Just like in the 70's. Probably what happened to yours Jean.

Maverick tanks dont have drains, do they? As many as I've pulled out you would think I would know by now. I'd say you been robbed.

Yeah, I have to agree, Dennis. Now I'm sorry I didn't have a locking gas cap on the car while it was outside. Those low-life creeps won't get a second chance anymore. The car is now kept in a locked garage all the time. It's a shame I didn't catch them at it. They would have gotten the same treatment that the jerks got who tried to steal the gas out of my Mach 1 back in the 70's. Those jerks got thier headlights smashed in with a baseball bat.:evilsmile

I'm assuming you were able to fix the sending unit without removing it from the tank. If you had removed the unit you would have lost most all the gas. If it wasn't taken out I too would have to guess you were robbed.

We fixed the sending unit out of the tank. In fact, I had an huge collection of containers ready to catch the gas when it should have poured out,but there was nothing there TO pour out. I thought it might have been because the car was up on jacks on one side to shift the gas to the other side of the tank, but when nothing at all came out I got a bad feeling about it.:16suspect At least the creeps left enough gas behind so we could get to the gas station, and we just barely made it.

good method to get gas robbers

A buddy of mines dad had a maverick that could never stay full. So he made the fuel port in the trunk and made the stock port go to a bottle of diesel fuel with radio controled car nitro fuel mix. Funny how the kid down the street needed a new engine. Poor little egg roll burner.... fried civic any one?

Jean: My sister & her husband have old ford tractors stored in a building. Some gas theif locked their dog in another building to keep him from barking and took the gas lines loose and stole all the gas from 6 tractors the other day. As for a locking gas cap that may just tick them off so they punch a hole in the bottom and drain it out.
It is getting bad up here, the new trick is to take plates off a car in a parking lot put the on their car and fill up & drive off without paying. Then take the plates back to the owner's car if they can and put their's back on. What a Bunch of Low Life We Have In The World!
