For a 351w my dad is suggesting a ready to run distributor, but they are very expensive...can't I just buy the Mallory 8555401c distributor and convert it to a ready to run distributor?

Why wouldn't any distributor be ready to run?

What's so wrong w/ a duraspark box and dizzy?

What kind of motor is this going in? If its just a stocker, I don't see spending the cash on that type of dizzy

Ready to run? Buy a reman points distributor, replace the points with any of the electronic modules and "wa-la" you have a ready to run electronic distributor. Reman with core: $55. Pertronix I unit: $60-70. Total cost: around $120.

Or buy a duraspark dizzy from your local parts store... $50
and the duraspark box for $30 tops (i get them for 18 but partsamerica.com shows em for 28)

$80 and you have a great ignition setup...

Wiring in a box and dizzy isn't all that hard even if you don't have the wiring.

Either 1) rob the wiring from a donor car or 2) use butt connectors to fit the plugs or 3) cut the plug on the dizzy and box off, and get a 4 wire flat trailer plug. lol Ive done this several times and it works pretty well also.

Man, Duraspark is so antiquated, save the money and buy something more modern.

Could go with something like this. I've been running it for about 8 months now with no trouble. Later added an MSD box to it. Purists will hate you for putting "Chevy junk" in your car, or maybe tell you all about how flawed the HEI design is, but it's a good part. It's proven very reliable for me and it was extremely easy to set up. Most importanly, it was ridiculously cheap. :thumbs2:

    LMAO, I find that hilarious.

Duraspark was the base for a lot of aftermarket ignitions.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a duraspark ignition, especially on a daily driver. There's no reason to put a $400+ ignition on a other wise stock motor, especially since some people may have gotten their cars for just a tad bit more than the price of that dizzy

:deadhorse For some reason, this sounds like so many cam comments. What's antiquated about it ? Ford used it until they went to the DIS in the Mod motors. And I think they only did that to keep us hot rodders from carbing them easily.
