Well, my harmonic balancer decided to come apart at around 6 grand the other night, so I need a new one....the trouble is, I don't know what to order. The car is a 72, the block is supposedly an 83, but I remember finding 1980 stamped on it when I built the engine.....how do I decide what balancer to order? Can y'all help me once again? Thanks! I appreciate it! Preston

Take the old one with you for a comparison is a good rule of thumb

Also, block casting really has nothing to do with it. Its the internals that matter.

If its a true 83 motor, it will use the 50oz

I guess that's what I'll need to do. I don't know if it's really an 83 or not.....that's just what I was told....This little part is confusing....Thanks Andy

Preston post some pictures of the balancer and maybe we can visually ID it for you.

When you buy one, do NOT use an over the counter brand. Spend just a little more and go with a higher performance one. I ended up using Professional Products balancer for $60 off ebay (same one Car Craft recently used to build up their small block Ford).

The first one I used was what they gave me at O'REilly, and the engine had a noticeable vibration, not a 50 oz vs 28 oz vibration, but more like 50 oz vs 52 oz.

Then when it was time to swap it with the Professional Products one that O'Reilly one came off by hand, and actually was wiggling on the shaft!!! It was just a sloppy fit.

The new one had a tight fit and was MUCH higher quality, and if you ever need to, you can unscrew the weight and add 28 oz without having to buy an entire new balancer.

There was a very light rub on the water pump housing, so watch that area. I just ground a small chunk off the cast housing and it fit fine. An aftermarket waterpump shouldn't have this casting bump that mine had on it.

Yep, I have one and it came in handy when I went to a 5.0 motor. A new counterweight cost $11 at the local speed shop.

The casting numbers on the old one will tell you what weight it was. Anyhing before an E2 prefix will be a 28 oz/in. E2 & up will be a 50 oz.
