Gears depend greatly on engine combo.

Personally, if you got a mild 302 and 3.55 gears, I would stick with that.

Shorter gears don't work well with very mild engines.

The 3.50 gears are a great street gear unless you have real tall rear tires which can negate some of the effect the gears give you. I certainly wouldn't go over 3.89's for a street car. Anything bigger than that makes your engine turn up too fast if you need to get on the highway.
I presently have 4.30's in mine but it's only because I broke my 3.89's at the strip. I will put the 3.89's back in as soon as I get another spool. The 4.30's make me stay off the highway for sure unless I run around 55 mph.

You probably have a 3.55. You're not going to see much difference IMO with a 3.89. I don't think it's worth the effort. Unless you want a strip only car, then go for it.:)

how much rpm do you take it up to?
what type of use to do you plan on?
how much freeway driveing are you going to do?
if your drag racing is it 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile?
i see that you dont have the final set of wheels and tires for the car. the hight of the tire is very important as to the selection of what gear ratio to go for.
i personaly find that 3.25s are a great ratio for all around use. it works well for cruseing, gives you decent acceleration and you can go freeway speeds with out pushing alot of rpm. 2.80 - 3.00s are really only good for fuel economy. 3.55s or 3.50s are good for street preformance, you can still go freeway speeds. ratios higher than 3.55s keep you from going safe freeway speeds (65mph+) at a comfortable rpm (3000 rpm and less). if you dont go on the freeway at all but do drive on the city streets and see speeds up to 55mph i would run 4.10s. if its only used for drag racing it really depends on the weight of the car, how much horsepower, the tire hight and the lenght of the track.

You don't mention what cam you have - If we assume it is a stock cam the the 3.5x is a great rear gear for you. You do mention that you have an Air Gap intake..... that is made to run at 6500 rpm? If your cam matches your intake then you should be running 3.7x - 4.xx rear gears.
(I'm betting it is for show and you are running a stock cam)
