Without the gauge for a reference point you can't set the timing with a timing light to factory specs...that gauge cost is about 5 bucks at a performance shop. The white mark on the harmonic balancer shoud be 6 degrees below top dead center and should be set with all vacuum advance hoses pulled and capped.
Your idle should be set at 850 rpm with the car in park and 550 with the car in gear and you foot on the brake...assuming its a Auto tranny.
These are factory specs for a stock 72, 302 2V with auto tranny.
    Hope it helps:)

I’ve been driving short distances only…
after an oil change I did notice a very small amount of white and mocha brown substance… I think I have to take it on a longer trip to burn the carbon out of it… maybe it will get rid of the condensation in my oil too
    :)

Somewhere less than 1 1/2 turns out from dead bottom. Screw it all the way down (not tight, just all the way down). Back it out less than 1 1/2 turns. Have car running when doing this and adjust for smooth operation.
