I have seen quite a few on they EBAY asking for $10k Haven't really followed to see if these people are ketting their price or not but man I miss the good ole days when nobody wanted a Maverick but me and you could buy one running and in good shape for a grand or less and drive the wheels off it and sell it to someone else to fix it up and then buy it back from them when they were done with it...
With the current economic backdrop I expect to see these prices come back down pretty soon. If you are in the market to buy a Maverick, be patient and you will find good deals.
I follow all Mavericks on ebay very, very closely.....and that is already happening. I have seen cars on there that would have brought $5000 a year or so ago, only bringing $1500 to $2000. Most of the cars have a reserve...so they don't sell...but some of them do sell. The bargains are out there.
And it still doesnt bring me anywhere near what i have in mine. (although, I restored mine in the hopes that i'll keep it forever, since it was my first car, so i wasn't looking at resale, just what i wanted in it.) This is very true....
Hungry buyers pay too much... but it's hard to be patient... I have a secret... when I looked at each of the my two Comets I was in heat like a 16 year old with his first car... could barely sleep... I got em both for 35% off what the owner asked and the "dealing" was painless compared to the 2-3 weeks I had to wait until I got them in my driveway... but it took me all summer to save up for the 2nd car before I even started shopping for one. Two recent Comets in Vancouver were trying to get 4000.00 and 6000.00 repectively, then eventually let them go for $1500.00. The second one I missed buying by a day, and the NEXT owner tried to flip it again for $2500.00 with no takers... trying to market it (a 76 big bumper 6 cyl) as a rare collector item. I'm glad I missed buying that one because it led me to the 72 V-8 Comet I have now. Like Barrett-Jackson, lots of inflated pricing out there, if you're in the market to buy one wait for the right car at the right price - 2 months I waited to buy my V-8 and that $1000 I saved will go a long way, at extraordinary pleasure, getting my hands dirty and doing it all myself.
Yeah, the whole classic and muscle car market will be good again as soon as the investors and speculators move on to to something else.
You guys are right, Alot of this is a bunch of hype. Look at the equity ride and housing market. Dont need to go there. Same thing with cars, except I can see early Grabbers holding there value, as well cars already established. Speaking of Barret Jackson, a local customizer in Mesa, Az told me its a scam too. Told me of some local cars that were clean and well done, but wouldnt sell for a couple years. Then they went to BJ and sold for 3 times what they were originally asking. Something wrong here. Seems theese speculators are inflating things and hiding money somewhere. He talked QUITE awhile about it. Al
Yes, Barrett-Jackson has definitely blown the market open. It does seem like some of the car prices have come down this year just a bit at their auctions. These millionaires are just playing games with their money. They really don't care how much they pay for some of these cars. They'll just resell it down the road and sometimes make a profit and write it off as a business expense if they take a loss. Meanwhile, it's guys like us that can't afford to go out and buy these dream muscle cars (Boss's, Shelby's, Hemi's, and so on) because they have increased 50 times their true value. There is no way and restored Boss 302 or Shelby Mustang is worth 100K or more but that's what some of them are bringing. Ten times their original price would put them in the 40-50K range which would be okay. At least it's comparable to going out and buying a new Shelby off the lot. Oh well. I guess I'm just a little sore because I let a 67 Shelby GT350 and a 70 Boss 302 Mustang slip thru my hands and will likely never be able to afford another. I also owned forty-five (65-73 Mustangs in various conditions) at once in 1981-1982. At the time I owned and operated a Mustang restoration shop. Was fun while it lasted.
