    I've got 15x10's with a 5" B/S on mine. 4" shouldn't be a problem. Just my opinion but Cragar's V5's are a better looking wheel.

Our cars fit maxium backspace of 4" to 4.5".
Due to slight variances in either wheel manufacturer, wheel material, car manufacturing tolerances, or all of the above... Some guys post that they cannot fit more than 4" backspace, while some guys use 4.5" with no problem.

So, 4" should be no problem for anyone. Beyond that, you need to do your homework with a measure tape.

I have tried to put a 4.5" backspaced wheel with a 265r15 BFG tire on a stock 77 and the tire just barely rubbed on the leaf spring.

I have 4.5 inch backspace. I don't see how a 5 inch would work. But as ratio411 said there are lots of differences.

I can't recall, but seems to me that the 9" housing I transplanted into mine was 1" wider than the 8" rear that came with the car. But even with the 295's on the wheels, they still have about 3/4" clearance to the springs. But as Dave :thumbs2:said, do your homework with the measuring tape first before buying wheels

Where did you source the 9"?
The narrowest stock 9" is roughly .75" wider overall IIRC.
Versillies is 1.5" wider, then the 67-70 Stang/Cougar is 2.75" wider.
You'd know if you had the Versillies because of the big, heavy, stock discs. That would give you a max of 5.25" BS. The narrowest (from a variety of cars, including Granada) gives you just under 5" max BS, then the most common of the bunch would give you in the neighborhood of 5.75" max BS.

Not that it matters much. I am just crunching the numbers out of curiosity and for something to do... ;)

Bought it off ebay, it had been narrowed already with forged bearing housing ends. For the $150 price, it was cheaper than doing one myself. Just the forged bearing housings were about half the cost (these run like $70-90 maybe?) The 57-59 Ford 9" housing is the same width as the Mav's 8" weren't they? (52-1/4")

    Mav is 51.50"
Same perch width though as all the others in question.
Even the ultrawide 71-73 Stang rear will bolt right in.

I did gain some clearance on the tire to springs by pulling the springs inward when I bolted the rear in, but later shoved em back to center after the squirly ride problems. Still have no issues though with the 5" B.S and 295's though. This housing may have been 53.5" from housing to housing.

I still have a stock rear and a 17x9 with 5in backspace fits in the back with about 1/4in between the lip and leafsprings. Next time I'm just going to get a new rear to get a nice fat tire under it.:thumbs2:
