to give my opinion of why is:
back then, for the most part, these cars were drivers...."throw-aways". Used up then giving to their kids for their first car. So things happened.
Now, for the "hobby-ist" its a matter of preference. I think my car looks better with black bumpers and would like weird (or not as good) with chrome.
    To each their own!

i think black would look better then a rusty and pitted chrome bumper no matter what color the body was

    hum....u prove a point....i think....

but i would rather go back in time, buy a 65 gto, put it in a garage with only a key i can find in the future and go get it but that would alter the time line, some people might die or everyone would and we would have chaos

im getting off topic though so lets go back to black bumpers

The only thing I remember from the 70's (really, the only thing I remember) was painting my hood flat black.

    Not the bumpers.

I started seeing people paint bumpers in the 80's, and it was a fad for awhile. I like it if it compliments, or matches body color. I really dont remember anyone doing it in the 60's or 70's until the Mustang II came out with painted bumpers in 1974, maybe that is where people got the idea, cept for pickup trucks which is another topic and we are on Maverick and Comets topic here..... I gotta go..........

The 70 mav we bought was blue with black bumpers. A younger individual owned it so I would suspect he couldn't afford to get the bumper recromed. Also the 72 that was owned by a slightly older than me individual bumpers where black. also notice the back to the future white walls on the back
