Hi, Few days ago i posted a thread about not being able to gas up my 74 maverick. I am still struggling to get gas in the tank, Has anyone ever cut open a tank? Any baffles, flaps ect that could keep the gas from going in? Im thinking maybe something may have rusted or broke bloking the flow.. Anyone just buy a new tank and that fixed it? HELP!!!!
The filler neck has a strip of metal in it not sure of its purpose but on my car it came loose and made it tricky to fill the tank
Take the filler tube out of the tank and look inside it,shine a light in the tank as well and see what you can see.If it all looks fine,check the vent hose from the top of the tank to the charcoal cannister in the engine compartment... look for kinks in the hose/steel line.Anything that could impede airflow in the vent line will impede filling the tank.(its gotta vent smewhere)besides on your shoes.Since you cant buy leaded fuel at the pump anymore... try to find a 75 and up fuel filler neck for un-leaded gas.Someone on here did that and solved his "wet shoes" problem with it.Good luck.
Would you know... if i push something down the filler neck to see if there is a blockage.... will i hit the sending unit if i go to far?
No, you're not going to hit the sending unit. It is fairly easy to remove the filler tube though. You can take the screws out under the filler cap and I think there are 4 screws inside the truck holding the rubber seal down around the bottom of the neck. Remove those and you should be able to twist the neck back and forth till it comes out. It will have to come out from the outside of the between the tail lights. When you put it back in, put a little lubricant on the rubber seal and it will slide in easily.
This seems fairly easy to do, i will attept it and let you know.. Anything unusual and i'll take a pic! Thanks for the tip
In general, you can't fill most old cars up as fast as new ones ... the old pumps used to be slower. I have never been able to fill up my Comet at full speed that pumps can hit now.
Trouble fueling I looked inside the neck and saw something that just wasnt right, so i removed the filler neck, and there it was!!! some type of broken flaper devise that was "clogging" the neck making it slow to fill up... best part is it can be fixed sitting down!!!
I did that and it worked great! If it has a flapper then it sounds like the one of the newer unleaded filler tubes. The leaded filler tubes didn't have flappers. Glad to hear you got it fixed.
