I am looking at purchasing a 1974 2 dr post Maveick with 87000 miles. This is my first involvement with the Maverick. What are the pros and cons of the Maverick. Based on the pictures I am impressed with the car.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Welcome to the board... :thumbs2:

Pros and Cons? What makes you want to buy this car in the first place? What shape is it in?

Pros would be it's a recognizable car, and a head turner at the same time.

Easy to build a nice sleeper.

Can disassmbled it with a 9/16ths and a 1/2in socket

Cons... Can be hard to find parts.

If you think it's in good shape, be sure to look for rust...

    Floorpans
    Battery Box
    Trunk
    Front bumper supports

Also ask if it leaks though the cowl.

Thanks for your reply. Based on pictures of the car I was sent thru email, the car looks really good. I have yet to talk with the owner. He is asking 2500.00 for it. You mentioned parts were hard to find - I had a 62 Falcon and was able to get parts fairly easy. However, are parts less available for the Maverick. I really like the looks 2 dr Maverick. Are there different types of Mavericks, such as Grabber, etc, which would make a difference in the price. I found a beautiful one on ebay but was much more money. Thanks.

Like Bob said look for rust. Check the cowl and the floor pans. Great cars, simple to maintain. Lots of other owners for a support group.:Welcome:

A Grabber usually goes for more. Also in 72 there was a Sprint model and 76 there was the Stallion. And there is the luxury model. The LDO optioned car. Price depends on model, options, v-8 is higher, 2dr or 4 dr. And mileage and paint, rust, etc. Another biggie for a lot of people is that 69.5 to 72 was the small bumper car. In 73 the front bumper got larger. And again in 74 the front and rear bumper got larger. These can be changed to small bumpers which many do.:)

    Welcome from Pittsburgh Pa!

Up here Maverick parts are lots easier than 62 Falcon. Good luck on your project! Do a search an you'll find where all replacement can be had, don't be afraid to ask too!

Lots of buddies down in Ga. I think that is on a PRO side! hee hee

I don't know about your neck of the woods, but there's not a single Maverick in any junkyard is SE Bama. Your typical mechanical parts (for the most part) you can get from the parts houses, but resto type parts are harder to come by.

Welcome to the center of the Maveick/Comet universe...
    Pros:
    cheap to acquire
    Simple construction
    "Some"stang parts swap over
Easy to do a V-8 conversions to.
    Light weight
Not a garden variety hot rod
    classic styling
    Sound platform for modifications
    Cons:
    Prone to rotting away
Prone to rotten cowls(like early stangs)
vynil top cars sometimes end up getting a complete roof swap(most people will scrap a car that we will put a roof on)
Repro body parts are practically nill(other than quarter panels) or fibeglass pieces that are lousey to questionable at best.
Repro interrior parts are tough as far as seats/door panels are concerned
Prone to floor pan rot(see rotten cowls)
Torque boxes usually go with the floor pan rot.
That said they are a bit harder to restore but we have a pretty tight network right here soo... most obsticles can be overcome with a question or a call.
Modified Mavericks/Comets tend to be more valuable than than un-molested ones unless you have a rare low mile pristine time capsule.
Basicaly dare to be different is the mantra if you have a Mav/Comet.So once again welcome to the madness and enjoy.
