I've read as many links, magazine articles and DVDs as I can find regarding the first Pro Stock Mavericks but there is some information I cannot find. I do know that they were relatively stock appearing - certainly compared to today's P/S racers! I have an article on Al Joniec's Rice & Holman SOHC Maverick and the outside and chassis look deceptively stock but what about the interior? I saw what appears to be a a very simple roll bar similar to what's in the JoHan model kits. What were they really like? Were the interiors stripped out full race style? Or did they have full dash boards but racing buckets? I noticed in this article that Mr. Joniec was running slapper bars on his car. What size wheels and tires were they using? It doesn't appear that his car was tubbed as the slicks were at the body line with the fender trimmed. I am in negotiation to purchase a '71 that I would like to use to replicate an early Pro Stock Maverick ah, minus the big block as I don't have deeeeep pockets! Sorry this is so long but I didn't want to hijack anyones thread that was already discussing their history. Thanks, Bruce
Hi shorty, The early Pro-Stock cars were stock chassis.Plus they had the sub-frames connected, and rollbars or later cages. Early on cars had their shock towers modified to fit the big-blocks of the day.Suspension on early cars was nothing more than relocated shocks, trick springs, wheelhouses, housing floaters or equivilant. Slapper-bars, then ladderbars. Most of theese set-ups were gone by 72-73 when tube frames with the early pinto A-arms became popular.Gapp& Roushs ShotgunExpress 72 Maverick was a all 2X3 car by then. The Mcphearson struts didnt appear until about 76 I think or somewhere around the later seventies. Bear in mind, if ya get bitten by the nostalgia bug most of theese setups are not legal to run due to varing safety standards. Most running cars are clones of the originals or completely updated older cars. I Was thinking of building my 72 maverick like G&R's 72 car. But after checking specs and soforth, decided it wasnt worth it. Hope this helps. Al
Thanks, Al, I know I won't get into Nostaglia Racing but prefer instead to build sort of a tribute car that I could run down a track on occasion. I'm planning either a 302-based 347 or a 351-based larger (427?) engine with dual quads, gear drive, a top loader 4 speed and a 9" that I have in the garage. Can you tell me what the interiors of the first cars looked like? Were they pretty much factory save for a roll bar and racing bucket seats? What size wheels and tires were common for this class of cars? Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.
I own one, well I doubt it raced in 1969/1970, it could've but It would be running times twice the time of Dyno Don. My car probably was an old super modified car, Once she gets a new coat of paint, I need to check the layers. Cars like Dyno Don's, the "Georgia Shaker" Mav or Eddie Shartmann's cars, Brannan's "Quiet One", I think the Shotgun Express wasn't a tube frame, well atleast not in the photos I have of it, The Taxi definatley was though. I am going to be running a 347 (Wish I had someyhing more era correct) If I get aluminum heads, they will be painted dark Ford blue. I am using M/T valve covers and might run the tunnel ram I have, just to give it a nostalgia look.
okay this is off-topic but, I wonder If I could get my car autographed by him, he runs Great Northern Dodge in Ohio, that's not very far away.
ProStreet, I like the looks of your car and if you don't mind my asking, what size tire/wheel combination, rear gear ratio and transmission are you using? This is all great information gentlemen - please keep it coming! Thanks, Bruce
Well, the rears are 31x13.5 M/T ET Drag slicks, the fronts are Moroso Drag Specials, wheels are Cragar supertricks, obviously I need new tires if I wanna run it on the street, and wheels too, I heard the aluminum supertricks aren't that street friendly. The gear ratio is 4:88, the ad said it has an N. case, the tranny is going to be a C-4 Auto, atleast untill she's up and running, my cousin has a 4 Spd. Toploader I would like to use in it.
Sorry to inform you Steven, but Im pretty sure Eddie Schartman passed away earlier this year. Get on the www.draglist.com. Go to the forum and look it up in lost freinds. You wouldnt have some pics of G&R's Shotgun Express would ya?, the red 72 car. Thanks. Al
I think Nicholson passed a few years back, Schartman is still alive I think. Brannan is still alive, infact he is selling a T-bolt and an R Code Galaxie that would be great Christmas presents for me. http://www.dickbrannan.com/id25.html Thanks, shorty, here is another Mav like mine you might like. There was a Red and White Mav like mine for sale around here not long ago, it was a nicer car for racing, but I want a car for both and plexiglass windows that wont roll down wouldn't be very nice on the street either.
Thanks for the pics guys. So it looks like the car still exists, GOOD! Speaking of X-mas presents, I met a gentleman at milan this summer. His wife bought him Gas Rhondas T-bolt last Christmas! Talk about a wonderful wife! I asked him if she had a twin, but no dice. I could have sworn somewhere I heard something about Schartman leaving us, not that I'd like to see it though. Please pardon me if Im wrong on this. Dont want to offend.
I only remember Dyno's SOHC Maverick being consistently competitive with Sox & Martin's Hemi, which was the car to beat in those days. Did the Boss 429's of Schartman & G&R ever win a national or regional P/S event?
Barry Poole I have some pictures of Poole's car the dash is glass and has S&W stuff has Crites looking suspension and the front of the rear springs are in ajustable eyes with quick pins like ladderbars are these days.
