Ok here's the deal. I have black interior in my car. The back seats are brown and the front seats are aqua from a 66 Mustang. Have any of you had any luck with vinyl dye. I know its good for like dashes and door panels and trim, but has anyone tried it on seats. Im afraid of it rubbing off. I dont want to spend a ton of money getting them reapolstered. Does anyone know a web site that does good seat upolstery for factory mustang seats? I have had no luck on yahoo.
Numerous responses here about SEM plastic and vinyl paint. Just be thorough about cleaning, degreasing, dewaxing, and priming and prepping to make the paint last. Vinyl just has to be cleaned well, flexible plastics should be primed. Apparently it does a good job. I'm turning my brown interior into black as well so I've read a lot and SEM seems to come up a frequently. Based on my experience with detailing... microfibre towels and the Mr. Clean Magic Erasor will clean dirt out of the pores and microscopic veins that a cloth and sponge cannot reach. They get into cracks that are literally smaller than the ridges of your fingerprints which is why they feel "sticky" when you touch them. I think SEM's "vinyl prep" is recommended before applying the paint. Whiskeee
And... like my car... I'd gamble $50 to re-do the entire interior well before spending days and days re-upholstering or paying $500 to replace my entire interior. It's worth a shot. Too bad nothing really works on carpets cuz I'd like to dye that as well but mine got eaten by rodents.
Clean clean clean and when you think its clean clean and clean some more! I done a mustang II a few years back with good results but I cleaned like a mad man to make sure there was no traces of any kind of armour all type product.
my friend kevin fielder owns nostalgic auto body and the best product that he has ever used is made by dupont. you have to spray it with a spray gun. the stuff is great. we cleaned and prepped a white convertible top on a 69 camaro and sprayed it with this stuff and it looked like we had put a new top on it. dupont said if prepped properly its gauranteed for years.
I got black seat covers from Mustangs Unlimited, about three years ago. It was my first attempt at installing covers. All I needed was a hog ring pliers and the hog rings to hold the upholstery on. They came out like factory installed. You can find Mustangs Unlimited on the internet. They ship out of Georgia and Connecticut. The Mustang was a 1969.
SEM color coat is the bomb. I just used it to restore my Pinto dash pad and the pad looks brand new, with the correct amount of sheen, nice opacity, and realistic texture. Chris
