My buddy tells me I have a 9 inch rear end on my 71 Maverick. It has a 302 in it. How can you tell if it is a nine inch rear end? What does this tag code mean OMC 520A?

No mav came with a 9" from the factory. If its a 9" you "cant" put a socket on the bottom nut under the pinion support. The socket "will"fit if its an 8"...(this is what allmost all mavs came with from the factory).

The tag isnt going to give you more than the date it was put together and for what vehicle.
If you want gear ratio info it is on the data sticker on the door. There is a code for the axle...this tells you ratio. So did you look to see if the socket fits on the bottom nut of the chunk under the pinion???
