The front right wheel on my 72 Maverick is frozen. I need to get it freed up so I can get the car moved into my shop. I do not know if it is the brake shoes stuck to the drum or the bearings but I think is is the shoes. What way do I turn the brake spoon to loosen the shoes? Been a long time since I messed with drum brakes. Any other tips ir tricks to use? I cannot find my brake spoon but tried a flat screw driver and could not get the adjustment star wheel to move so I will use some PB Blaster on it tonight and let is soak. Thanks for any help clint
I have used a BFH with some success in these cases. Pull the wheel, and smack the drum all around the brake contact area.
Try the BFH first. Since it is the front. You could grind the heads off of the shoe retaining pins and remove the drum. Be careful because parts can fly once it is pulled free from the wheel cylinder and pivot pin.
What a great trick!! Seems obvious now that you say it but it never occured to me to do that when drums are stuck. Once the drum is off the wheel can be put back on without the drum to move the car a little. Did that to get my Mav home. Just a couple of miles at low speed.
I tried the BFH but was a bit afraid of busting the drum. This is an example of exactly why I posted here. Grind the heads off of the studs holding the hardware on. So simple and so easy yet I did not think about it. Where is that Homer Simpson D'Ole when you need it? I will let it soak tonight and tomorrow if it won't break free I will knock the heads off the studs. Thanks! Clint
Tried pulling it. Pulled about 20ft and up onto my buddies tilt bed trailer. Had to hook it to an Oak to pull it back off the trailer when when got it home. It is STUCK! I'll get the grinder or sharp chisel out before the rain I HOPE. clint
air would not keep you from removing.... There is one of a few things happening here. 1. There is a significant rust lip on the drum. 2. The wheel cylinder is seized 3. The parking brake cable is on or seized in the on posistion 4. The drum itself is rusted to the shoes 5.if it is a frt drum bearing has "welded" itself to the spindle 6. If it is a rear brake an axle seal may be leaking and the shoes swelled up from the fluid contamination. 7.. i'm not there to show you how it's done.... Did you try deadjusting the self adjusters?
I got it loose. It was the front. The adjustment wheels was stuck as well so I could not back it off. I took some good advice from a member here and knocked off the heads of the studs holding the shoes on from the back. I then still had to work and work getting the drum off. The shoes were rusted to the drum also. clint
