I finally took my mav to the brake shop just to find out all that was wrong with the brakes before I went to town taking them apart and fixing them. Lucky for me, all they needed was a little adjustment and I was good. While the guy was working on my car, I thought I'd ask what he thought about the steering issue that I'd been having. He took a look and said that I needed to replace my steering coupling disc. I went to carquest and bought the only type they had but I cant figure out for the life of me how it is supposed to go on there. has anyone ever had to do something like this? please help. thanks.
that is a pain. the first problem is that a direct replacement is not easy to find. you have to remove the old one from the car. i think its part of the stearing colum so that means pulling the colum or you can drop the stearing box. now you will find that the old coupler was riveted in. you will have to cut or drill out the rivits. now you hope that the one you got is the right size and put it in with nuts and bolts. reassemble and your stearing should be significantly beter
it looks as though the steering coupler disc is made of rubber or something similar. I have the steering column out and I think I can fix it but while I was down there I discovered what I think is some significant play in the steering box. what do I do to fix play in the steering bax? anyone?
you may be able to adjust some of the play out of the gear box. loosen the jamb nut on top of the gear box and tighten up the center screw untill it's tight, then back it off 1/4 to 1/2 turn and tighten the jamb nut back down. that should take care of at least some of the slack
