is the dash in a 1971 maverick hard to remove.i need to paint it.and at the same time repair the cowl. thanks john
See the post "Dumb Question." The screws along the top face the windshield. If you need a windshield do both at the same time.
The screw heads face the bottom of the windshield. I dont think its enough room to get them out. I did get mine out but that was 20 years ago. I think I did them from underneath with small vice grips. All I remember is a lot of pain and cuts. Probably why my back is wrecked 20 years later.
It's easiest to just remove the windshield. It can be done without taking the windshield out, but it's a big PITA. I've removed a couple of windshields from these cars, and isn't really too hard. Use a nice sharp razor or knife to cut the top of the gasket away after you remove the windshield trim. Then work it out little by little. Most importantly, take your time.
what Jamie said. this is also a very good time to replace your windshield gasket and/or headliner while it's out
I once removed the windshield by myself and i cut the gasket with a razor to do it. At the time i didn't think much of it i just did it but knowing the amount of work i think i would be sorta scared to do it now. By the way that windshield is in my Comet so it can be done just........CAREFULLY.
Ooohh....those are kinda tight spaces though, hard to get a good paint flow/coverage with the glass in the way. Hope you can figure it out. Chris
I wrote a tech article about removing the dash about 9 years ago. It's kinda crusty, but there might be some helpful info in there for ya: http://www.maverickcomet.com/TechArticles/RemoveDash/RemoveDash.asp
