'70 mavericks had a 7.5" (plate cover) rear end. anything from 71-77 had an 8" rear, both 4 lug and 5lug alike.

How about some details on the 8.8 swap? I need to do something, and I could use another 3" wider housing to use the 4 7/8" backspace wheels I already have.

using a 8.8 housing out of a fox mustang is 1 inch longer per side than a maverick rear this is a pic of mine with a 17x8 rim with 5.72inch backspacing and a 275/40/17 tire
it fits just about perfect for my taste img_0596_original.jpg

    rear

Did you use the 94-98 rear end? They were all the same length, 99 and up the housings are wider.

    rear

Did you convert to discs? That is what makes the 94-98 rears wider, the housings are the same but the discs add around .75 inches per side.
