im trying to set up my pullies on my 5.0 roller motor and cant get them to fit.the water pump is a standard rotation high volume for the roller motor the pullys are single groove off a boss 302. bolt holes are fine just they are sitting to close togather and i cant get them both on. do i need a different water pump. to make this work. i can take a picture later if needed. HELP im so close to having this motor done. john P.S. will an older style pump work on the newer roller motor
Sounds like the crank pulley is too big. What is the diameter of the pulleys? I got one of the single groove water pump pulleys years ago but it would not clear my stock crank pulley. I now have a matching set, and the crank pulley is smaller than the larger two grooves on my factory 3-groove pulley (though I think it is larger than the small pulley that used to run the water pump).
I take back what I said... I think the water pumps are indeed different. I have a late model reverse rotation pump sitting on my old 302, and the water pump snout is about an inch lower than my factory pump on my new motor. My pulleys match the dimensions of the ones in the auction Dave posted in your original thread looking for pulleys. My pulleys not only are too close together on the later pump, but it appears to be the short snout water pump, because the water pump pulley sits behind the crank pulley. If I put it on first, I can get the crank pulley on, and they overlap by over half an inch. One other thing to note is the bolt pattern is different on the late model water pumps, so the old pulley holes don't line up.
You also need to make sure you don't have a reverse rotation timing cover and water pump. It will overheat turning a reverse rotation pump backwards with those pulleys. I have always heard (take it for what it's worth) that the factory timing covers are unique to the rotation of the pump, but Summit carries one they say works with either. If you have a standard 302 timing cover, it should be fine with the standard rotation pump.
I think the 5.0 balancer is wider . pretty sure somebody makes a conversion balancer. I had the same problem, 86 roller engine, used the early timing cover (67 ford) and sill was off like 3/4 of an inch. I ended up using a fan spacer behind the waterpump pulley, and had to then build the brackets for the alternator out( creative welding), but it worked . good luck
might wanna drill out the drivers side valve cover for a pcv while you,re fabricating, there is a place to do so, think you have to make a sheetmetal baffle if i remember correctly, got h.o. covers on my car .the 5/16 fitting at the oil fill looks bad so i chopped the fill down and used a clamp on breather
yes the pump i ordered thru summit is a standard rotation but on the older 302s it looks like the water pump snout is a bit higher.so i think that is why my pullys wont fit.
I went through this a couple of times on 67-72 F100's. It is a can of worms to say the least. There are so many different pullies out there it will befuddle your mind if you are not careful. I went to the pull a parts 4 times to get one small block truck running. What I didn't know until after the 2nd trip s that there are two different fan pulley bolt patterns. I suggest you get some good measurements of what you need and hit the local Pull A Part. They are cheap enough so that you can buy a couple of different pulley sets. Clint
