what kind of internals does the engine have? stock cam? my guess if the internals are stock from the 72, including cam, and you just have elderbrock intake with a 2 barrel and exhaust, you'd put out maybe 180hp and 15.5 in 1/4 mile

post your specs at the bottom in your signature like mine (below) so we can help you out more.

72 had higher compression, if i am not mistaken, and a bit more HP.

Swap that rear gear, and heads (e7 or gt40), look for a new cam, and you can almost double that HP in no time.

i dont want to have to make another thread so i might as well post mine too.

might be an '88 302? not sure on the year but ya...
    3" exhaust
    hooker headers
    edlebrock performer intake
    holley 600 cfm carb
    3.55 gears
not to sure on the cam but if i remember correctly its a comp cam.
the guy i bought it from said the top end was all he rebuilt and the bottom end was in great condition so he didnt build that up.

so ya...any guesses on my hp?

Blackdog (and anyone else asking a similar question), Probably the most important details needed are what head and cam you are using. "Comp Cam" can vary TREMENDOUSLY!!! Stock heads or AFR 185 might make a little bit of difference, as well. Any estimate will be completely worthless without at least a hint of what head and cam you have.

Or, we can guesstimate that you are running anywhere from 80 to 450 hp based on the info you gave us.
