I am considering swapping a 351W out of a '69 Cougar and a toploader out of a '72 Mustang into my '72 Comet GT. I also have a toploader 3+OD which I can use. Which toploader would be better and what problems trying to install a 351/4spd in a GT would be? Jim
the 3+1 is only weak in the 4th gear the rest is a good trans to run windsors are tight but do fit I am putting one in my car right now
Same here....just got my install 2 days ago ....the factory granada shifter is a little sloppy but you can always spend 4 times the cost of the tranny you can get an adapter and hurst shifter. Robert
What I am mainly concerned with is using the toploader with the 351 instead of an automatic. I think I read that you could not do it because of steering column obstruction to the exhaust or clutch z bar problems or something else in that area. I have both factory linkages and shifters for the 2 transmissions. I also have the larger bellhousing, clutch pedals, z bar, mounting ball, etc for the swap. I will need a few other things, but my main concern was to actually even be able to do it. On a side note, the rear end currently in the car has 4:62 gears with a mini spool. I also recently bought another complete rear end with 3:00 gears. I will probably use the 3:00 rear and sell the other one. Anybody know what 4:62 rears are worth? Jim Jim
I am doing the same swap into a '71 Comet. Problem is I don't have the rest of the car ready yet. I have the parts but haven't done the test fit yet. From what I have read it's doable but the problem is with the headers and the Z-bar stuff. Obviously the 351 will fit based on what's already been posted on the site, and the bigger bell will fit based on what's been posted (I believe MercGT73's posts (http://www.mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=58349) show a big bell and Toploader combo he pulled out. What I haven't seen is any posts with the 351W/Toploader and headers. I think the headers are the major hurdle for the linkage.
