Ok it has been a rushed few weeks. got the rear springs rearched and a 4th leaf added...added a 3.00 gear...rebuilt rear brakes...added front disc's......added 3 speed OD tranny and pedals....seats recovered and a few other items. Now the Issue HEADERS.....well the headers that were in it weren't for the maverick. once I got it up on the lift about have of the tubes were crushed. So chuck brought over an extra set of headman 88300's and they slid right in. BUT and there is always a butt in there somewhere the PS slave cyl hit the headers. there was already a drop bracket mounted but noticed it wasn't mounted corectly, so I installed a brand new bracket... didn't help.....I did notice that the arm coming from the steering box looked different than the PS assembly I had on the shelf. anyone ran into this issue. I only have a few days to get this on the road for the rod run so at the moment I have installed a manual steering center link. Anyone ever had this problem? Robert
I lost more than i gained sunday. got the brake lines purged..as best one can do with a mitivac....still having issues with the header on the drivers side. started installing manual steering and found that the arm from the steering box has to be changed...tapper comes from bottom on a PS car and from the top on a manual one.....so I didn't get far with that...then I tried to install the V8 Z-bar and they hit the header also....by that time I laid down the tools and went inside Should I put the 88300's back in the box and order the 6901's or just get rid of all this and get me a t5 and go with a cable? Robert
Well I am about as frustrated as you can get....I will say I dont like the headman 88300's and a factory Z-bar...I have never cussed as much as I did tonight....I just dropped my tools and came in the house. Robert
I had those headers on my very first Maverick (I still have them in the attic of my garage) I know what your feeling!! My wife (way before she was my wife) was helping me install them one night at her Dad's shop...we were almost divorced before we were married!!
ive never run them myself, but i know Tim Keck has and he mentioned they fit pretty good in his car ive always had 6901's myself....
It most likely the fact that I am tring to install the factory Z-bar with them.....I am ready to order the 6901's. Robert
the ones i am tring belong to chuck....he broght them over for me to try....he also had a set of flowtech. Robert
well got the 88300's out and the 6901's installed, got all the brakes bleed and the linkage to the shifter where it needs to be. Ran into another issue with the tie-rod ends.....seems that on the disk brakes for mavericks there are 2 different sizes for the taper. I knew it was different on the granada but not off a maverick. all my disc's are off mavericks or comets so I ASSUMED there would be no problem...WRONG.....so I took off the whole front steering on the 77 comet and they fit....but the right side tie-rod is toast. so on the way home today I will stop and order both sides. Here is a question for you guys that have done this conversion before. I looked on rockauto at a 71/72 and a 75/77 and on both the inner and outer are different part numbers I will assume that all I need to do is order the inner for the 71/72 and the outer for the 75/77.....correct? Robert
not sure how i missed this thread: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=53375&highlight=power+manual+steering&page=5 i went to the adapter and removed the steering pump because of the hedmans. i also have factory floor shift aoutmatic and had to disconnect the shift linkage that goes to the column wheel lock majiggy. i dont really know if that set of headers could have been made to clear the zbar without some BFH time.... as for the disc brakes i went with a 74 from a junkyard and was fine with factory style steelies, when i put on 14 inch mag 500s i had to grind the weld down on the calipers so they would clear (very tight). i havent had any problems with the tie rods however, what type of rims are you running?
