Let's say you bought a Mav/Comet that you know you will keep as a daily driver or just a weekend driver, what is the first thing you know you would have to replace/upgrade from the 30+ year stock stuff?

Agreed, and if it`s a drum brake car I wouldn`t even spend the money to redo the front drums...go ahead and swap them to Discs.:yup:

With mine the brakes were good when I bought it but I did tires, shocks (they were stock), plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor. I needed a radiator cap, a couple bulbs and a starter solenoid as well but that's more because my car got scavenged for those the 8 years it was parked.

like everyone else said, brakes are first priority. it's one thing to run great, but it's another thing to stop great. which do you think is more important? ;)

Although, a killer sound system would be sweet! then you couldn't hear the screams of the people you run over....

Personally, I am going to ditch the front drums and convert to disk brakes on my Comet GT as they are 110% better to have on a daily driver.

Then I am going to go through and replace both the master cylinder and ALL rubber hoses in the system. Once that is done I am going to thoroughly inspect both the front and rear suspension, replacing what even slightly looks like it's not up to par.

After that it's on to getting it running under it's own power and then making sure the lights and all electrics are working properly.

The last thing I will do is put on NEW tires, have it aligned, and add any "toys" I want to add like a stereo system, etc.

My honest suggestion is to make a list of what is needed as you inspect the car and check things off as you complete them.

    Hope this helps,
    -Scott H.

all 3 mavs I owned had no problems with breaks . . . all were stock drums. So I wouldn't change the drums because there wasn't that much of a noticable breaking difference after I upgraded to discs. I would make sure I have new tires, a nice tuneup and new weather seals (very annoying hearing the wing wissle when you driving).
